What They Don't Tell You About Active Rain

By
Real Estate Agent with McGraw Realtors

Blog time by Bob HaywoodThere is a secret about Active Rain that you don't know.

People talk about it at times, but not openly.  They just kind of refer to it in blogs and if you aren't paying attention, you miss it.  I've never really heard Bob Stewart or the other Active Rain folks talk about it openly either.  And its not because they have something to hide.  It's more because it is something that comes as a result of being in the Rain and having a game plan for your blogging.  So what is this secret that lurks below the blogosphere surface at Active Rain?  Its' this...

When you blog correctly, you're going to get busy.

And not only busy, but so busy helping buyers and sellers
that your blogging time takes a serious hit.

I was thinking about this yesterday as I left my office in the afternoon to go show a property.  It was late in the day and I had been on the go all day long with real estate business.  The sunny, warm day reminded me of my early career sunny, warm days when I would sit at my desk in the "bullpen" (beginner's desks) and wonder what marketing I should be doing or calls I might could make or just exactly how to do something in real estate.

I don't have that problem anymore largely thanks to Active Rain and the power of blogging.  Some days I am so busy that it is late afternoon or night time before I can even begin to think about writing my daily blog.  This is the little secret about Active Rain that nobody talks about.  And the reason nobody talks about it because when it happens, you get too busy to blog.  And, if you do squeeze in a blog, you don't want to sound like some whiny, ungrateful kind of person because you're busy.  Instead, you throw together quickly written blogs that say things like, "I'm so busy," or "Haven't been at AR for a while..."  What you really mean is that you have accomplished exactly what is supposed to happen!  Your blogs, combined with your social media strategy and other strategies, are paying off.  The phone is ringing, people want you to list their home and show them houses and closings are lining up.

So keep that in mind the next time you sit down to write a blog.  Done right, that blog might just be the very thing that causes a consumer to call you.  And done right over and over and over, you'll get busier and busier and busier.  And then you'll be so busy and successful that you won't have time to blog about why you don't have time to blog either!

Thanks Active Rain!  I like this little secret!  LOL

Bob:

An age old problem for most. Taking time to prospect (blog) you get busy, because you are busy you stop prospecting (blogging) and then you stop being busy. And then, you start the cycle over again.

I block 3 hours daily, an appointment with myself (that I keep) and you will not believe how busy a person can be.

Bob - You hit the nail on the head.  It took about 3 months after I joined in 2006 to get busy, and by summer of 2007, I dropped off the rain almost completely!  I'm now back only because I have taken time back by outsourcing some of the things I used to personally handle, and by streamlining our processed.  Stay busy!

Hi Bob, All prospecting seems to "go out the window" when we get busy, but it is absolutely necessary to keep the pipeline full.  I personally like the newer tools such as blogging, Facebook, etc.  The more you do it, the easier it gets.  Good post - Thanks!  ~Lisa

Blogging = working. Blogging = branding. Blogging = Prospecting. It is not an idle pursuit if done right. and if done in conjunction with other things agents are supposed to do.

Yes, I am a victim of my own blogging success - too many things to do, I better get busy blogging or I will fade away on the internet.

Good point. On this very topic, I suggest to the agents that hire me for advertising and marketing consulting that they schedule their blogging for maybe a couple times per week, thus making sure they have some time to keep it up no matter how busy they really are or are not.

Frankly, I have done some ghost writing for a few clients who send me some notes or a link to get me going on their behalf, then approve my final draft and put it up.

Bob, I can seriously relate. I am swamped with business. Lately when I do find time to get over here I've getting the dreaded "proxy error". That makes it real hard to get my AR time in.

For those who are still waiting for the rewards of blogging, I can tell you that when I started writing it was months and months before I received my first lead from it.  After that, it was like the floodgates opened.  50% of my business last year was from blogging and more than that so far this year.  My partner and I were in a lead generation class this week and when she was asked how she lead generates, her answer was "I check my emails from Lisa".

Good post, Bob, and very believable.  I am about the busiest I have ever been right now, without having blogged up until recently.  I am just now settling into my blogging strategy and beginning to scratch the surface of implementing it.  I can already see how (and how much) it is going to impact my business.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda started a long time ago, but having not, there's no time like the present.

Maybe a solution is to write some blog drafts in advance and submit them at the right time. I've just starting to blog, having made around 10 posts. I have an additional 3 drafted and ready to go at the proper time.

I'm inclined to think like Bill above me here.  I am busy which is great, and then my blogging consistency takes a hit.  I've decided that doing a blogging blitz makes the most sense.  Just carve out an hour or so and let the creative juices flow.  I can then post at intervals that make sense, rather than coincide with my available time.

Great post Bob.  I've been so busy I just got around to reading it after 5 months or so.  I wish I could say it had to do with ActiveRain, but hopefully as I learn to navigate through this blogging thing I can share the same testimonial as you.  Have a great night!
