Moving to St Charles, IL–Performing Arts
When looking into Moving to St Charles, IL one of the things we looked for was top rated entertainment. St Charles has some of the best in the area. Outdoor festivals and live music abound in the area, are common in the summer, but in the winter we look to performances indoors. Jen and I love seeing performances when possible. Since our son was born, we don’t get much of a chance to get to the local clubs as much as we used to. However, these are some of our favorite places for performing arts.
Arcada Theater
The Arcada Theatre was built in 1926 by local millionaire and Chicago Tribune cartoonist Lester J. Norris. The Arcada became known as one of the outstanding Vaudeville houses in the Fox River Valley. Many legendary stars have graced the stage, including George Burns and Gracie Allen, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, Olivia DeHavilland, the John Phillip Sousa Band, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Vincent Price, Jeanette McDonald, Walter Slezak and Maria Von Trapp, Fibber McGee and Molly Lora to name a few.
After extensive restoration, the Arcada is back to its original state including the original pipe organ that rises from beneath the stage floor. The newly renovated theater has hosted many icons including Mickey Rooney, Jerry Lewis and Martin Short.
Steel Beam Theater
The Steel Beam Theatre is an intimate 79-seat, not-for-profit theatre located in downtown St Charles. It features high-quality, theatrical training, entertainment, and arts awareness to the Fox Valley. The Steel Beam Theater was voted “Best of the Fox” in 2004 and 2005 for live theatre by readers of the Kane County Chronicle and received The Northwest Herald’s Readers’ Choice Award.
Noble Fool Theater
Chicago’s Noble Fool Theater Company had its inaugural season in 2004 with an offering of fresh interpretations of classical and original productions such as “The Underpants” by Steve Martin, “The Vikings! A Musical in Two Axe”, and the Woody Allen classic, “Don’t Drink The Water”.
A year later, Noble Fool Theatricals was formed specifically to serve the western suburbs with a repertoire of well-known Off-Broadway musicals, comedies, educational programming and family shows. Today, they continue to bring many of downtown’s finest award-winning artists and well-known comedy troupes to St. Charles, such as Off-Broadway’s longest-running musical “I Love You”, “You’re Perfect, Now Change”, holiday favorites like “A Christmas Story”, Chicago’s very own The Second City, and the record-breaking Broadway comedy “Defending the Caveman”.
Zanies
This sister room of the legendary Zanies in downtown Chicago has been making audiences laugh with the same great talent since 1989. The Chicago comedy club has featured the routines of nationally known comics like Craig Ferguson, John Pinette, Chelsey Handler and Gilbert Gottfried, along with some of the country’s best new talents.
