Why isn't Piggy as Popular as it Used to be?
Great post Don, I wonder why balancing your check book and living within your means is not taught in school. Kids are forced to learn a foriegn language but cannot balance a checkbook, GO FIGURE.
Why isn't Piggy as Popular as it Used to be?
I remember being in the 2nd grade and having the local Savings & Loan representatives come to our school and promote savings to our small town class!
I remember being so excited to open my first savings account at the First Commerce Bank in Milton-Freewater, OR!
I also remember watching an episode of the Brady Bunch when Bobby & Cindy received their savings banks & I so wanted a cool coin saving device of my own!
I remember when the Japanese had passed the savings rate of the U.S. when I was in Junior High & I was appalled that they would save more than us Americans!
Well, I think the instant gratification of buying now & paying later has hurt America! People don't save for a rainy day any more.
If they did, and if they had 3-6 months of reserves in a safe, savings account, the unemployment issue wouldn't be as big as it is today!
I hear of FHA proposing 5% minimum down payments. It might hurt us in the short drive, but the long run, I think it will be good for America to start SAVING again!
Get those Piggy Banks out & teach your young kids how to save! Make it exciting & teach them the power of compound interest!
