When you think about it, Facebook is weird. Where else in the world do you call people who you don’t know your friends? I probably have about 10-15 friends. Most are acquaintances and the others 400 are total strangers.

There’s a lot of excessive trust in the Facebook world. People have entirely dropped their sense of cynicism when logged on. They have no reason to distrust. People who are your “Friends” are generally those who you “know, like and trust.” In this world, your guard is as down as it will ever be. You are in the safety of your own home or office hanging with people all over the world in big cities and little towns and never have to watch your back.

Reports of sex offenders on social media abound. Do you know who your child is befriending?

Many of the “strangers” came into my life as a result of what I do, and I appreciate and accept them for connecting. But I know plenty of other people who don’t write or do media and might be in college, and have 2000 friends! And they know 5 of them! Social media is weird.

Employers, potential employers and others will often friend someone for the sole purposes of getting a solid profile of that person to determine if they want to hire them. Now the AP reportsU.S. law enforcement agents are following the rest of the Internet world into popular social-networking services, going undercover with false online profiles to communicate with suspects and gather private information, according to an internal Justice Department document that offers a tantalizing glimpse of issues related to privacy and crime-fighting.”

I don’t think there is anything wrong with this; it’s a good thing actually. There is a question of legality and whether or not government agents can pose as someone else and lie, which often violates the terms and conditions of the sites themselves.

But the fact remains, there are bad people out there and they need looking after. And if it means an FBI agent posing as someone to catch the bad guy, I’m all for it. So next time you get a friend request from a stranger, they might be someone checking up on you. Guilty conscience? Hope not.

Since I own my children's computers, I consider them and the content on them as mine so my kids are limited with what they can do and everything they do on-line is monitored and subject to my whims.  Trust but verify.

Ingrid,

You can categorize your friends on facebook and you can control what each group can see on your profile.  You may not want to share all of your family photos (party pictures for some of you) with all of your client's or people you may not know very well.  Click on your friends on the left hand size and then click create list......pick the people you want in that list.  Now you can change the settings for what those people can see on your profile.

There is plenty of information out there about this.  You can always search for: categorizing friends on facebook.

I know this isn't failsafe but it's a start.

I don't tend to befriend those that I do not know.  I get some weird requests sometimes.

I hadn't considered this but I can see that it is definitely a possibility and something we need to consider.

In the beginning I worried about it more than I do now. Perhaps familiarity.... not that that is good. But I haven't thought too much about it I admit.

If I don't know who you are or you don't have a reason why, your friend request will not be accepted.  Simple as that.  Now I do have about 300 'friends' who are on board solely for Mafia Wars - and they have limited access to my profile.  That's something that's vastly underutilized in FB.....privacy options are available, but I think most people are unaware of them.

There are so many friends on facebook as a Realtor that I just cover a few basic topics...dogs, tech tools, and Realtor stuff. Other than that, not much to say. Oh, and stuff I have read sometimes or cool News stories.

Thanks for this post.  I have categorized everyone.  I do not share everything with everyone. I am still fairly transparent with everyone, but do think about how it will be taken and if it could be information that could make me unsafe.  I also only really "friend" people I have a real connection with in real life.  Like actual people I went to school with, agents I am doing a cross sale with,  clients I know, parents from my kids schooling and so on.  I am friends with a couple agents accross the nation too, but I refer people I don't know, but who I want to stay in touch with on face book for business purposes to my business fan page, that way I can stay in touch, I can message them, but it is separate.

I'm just getting into the Twitter, Facebook, etc., and to me it is a business. I have not placed family informtion on FB, and probably won't.

I ignore friend request unless it's someone from a real estate related field, or someone that I know, either a friend or acquaintance.

I have changed my strategy in which a complete stranger request only gets the option of becoming a fan on my business page only.  I also try not to post, or make available, too much personal information.  I just try to be careful and set my settings according to my preferences.  I feel I can be social without being too personal.  You're right, you never know if the request is friend, foe or Fed and luckily I don't have a guilty conscience to worry about!  Good post and thanks for sharing!

And when I run for office some day, they'll dig up my Facebook page and find that I considered myself "friends" with a sex offender or two.  Wouldn't that be grand?

Not so sure about sex offender, but I did recently discover that one of my past clients had been arrested for having a grow operation.  Never would have seen it coming from them.  I should write a post about it on my lethbridge home for sale blog, but I am not sure that I can ethically do so.  Hmm, that is something to think about.
