FARMS - THE IMPACT OF A "QUICK" SPRING

Wow!  From 20 degrees to 80 in a few short weeks.  Other than frantically digging out the summer clothes much sooner, what impact has all this had on our farms and ranches?  Flies.  Talk about THE HATCH!  One day there were none.  The next day  we needed full fly gear - masks, cotton blankets, the works!  Then the sudden heat. UGH!  Full winter coats trying to shed but still a heavy coat - imagine trying to be excited with the heat and hair!  Then we have the grass growing on full throttle!  Not good for horses who colic easily.  The heat, the sweet grass...what a combination for colic!  Lastly, time for springtime shots, Coggins and the dentist.  Combine the shots (4 or 5 injections), with the heat and the flies and know that your horse just isn't going to be him or herself for a few days!  What helps?  A nice cooling water hose below the knees to help cool the body but not put them into shock.  A wet cloth around the face, eyes and nose - again cooling those sensitive areas!  Back off the grain a bit to help keep the colic at bay and feed course hay to offset the sweet grass.  Other than that, understand it is transition time and work your horse accordingly.  Enjoy the beauty of the spring - and keep your partner healthy in the meantime!  Happy riding!
