Ever wondered what you could do to help your local animal shelter or humane society? If you are like me, with a house already full of pets, adopting more is just not an option. So what else is there?
For the past two years, I have hosted a barbeque at my house in the summer for friends, family and past clients called Hot Dogs for Homeless Dogs (and Cats!). It's all to benefit the Atlanta Humane Society. Guests bring donations for the animals (pet food, pet treats, pet supplies, old towels and blankets, sheets and newspapers, toys and supplies, like leashes and collars, etc.) and enjoy a fun summer afternoon cookout in return. I'm planning the third annual one right now!
To help out your local shelter, you may want to organize a similar event. Or you can find out what their volunteer policies and needs are. For example, the Atlanta Humane Society has an entire page on their website dedicated to volunteer information. Call your local animal shelter or visit their website to find out more.
But what about those smaller shelters who may not have a website or even have volunteer policies in place?
An article on Yahoo!Pets by Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, entitled "How YOU Can Help Dogs in Need!" answers that very question.
Some suggestions offered for other ways you can help your local animal shelter are:
- Photographers - take photos of new pets for flyers, websites, etc.
- Computer/IT Experts - update an existing website or create a new one for a shelter that is without
- Contractors and Handypersons - help with minor repair work
- Writers - write newsletter articles and web content to help spread the word
