While on a recent rental property presentation I mentioned the difference in the VA landlord-tenant laws and the homeowners appeared confused. They did not know there was a difference and wanted to know where they would get a “copy” of the law.
Several years ago, I actually had a landlord question “what law” when I advised him he might want to re-consider his proposed action with his residents since it could be illegal or against the law.
YES, there are laws * federal, state and local * that govern the landlord-tenant relationship and “ignorance” of these laws may well be co$tly.
Fortunately, Virginia has a largely pro-landlord legislature AND our very active landlord and apartment associations along with the Virginia Association of Realtors have been successful in limiting encroaching on landlord and private property rights.
Property managers and landlords can get regular and routine updates on new landlord-tenant laws by attending local apartment association seminars or the state-wide all-day seminars VAR will sponsor in April and May featuring Chip Dicks who helps draft the legislation on behalf of VAR.
Chip’s seminars are packed with good information and the networking with other property managers from around the state is worth the co$t and the 1-hour trip to Richmond.
Landlords and property managers should seek out these educational offerings and schedule them to better understand their business and service their clients and residents!!
