Summit County, Colorado has plenty of events and races for charitable causes, including the Romp to Stomp out Breast Cancer, a snowshoe race held in Frisco and sponsored by Tubbs snowshoesGetting ready for the Race for the cure

This weekend I was in Aspen, and on Saturday morning I walked  the 5K walk for the Susan G Komen Foundation's Race for the Cure.  Summit County does not have the summer event yet.  We do have the winter snowshoe race, which I hope to do next season.  The photo to the right was taken at the start of the race, where everyone was waiting for the countdown.

This was my second year to walk/run (she runs, I walk)  with my friend Susie, a 15 year survivor, and our other friends Lynne and Anita. Many of my family members and friends have had breast cancer, and it is my way of honoring them.  It is an emotional event and you see some tears, but you see many more smiles from the survivors and all their friends and family members.  My sister-in-law Carol attended a race with many of her friends as she was fighting her battle, and I remember how much encouragement she gained from the visible show of support.

Survivor shirt

I like the message on the backs of the pink survivor shirts, as it really sums up what the race is all about.

Something else I noted is pieces of pink paper pinned to the backs of the runners and walkers.  The paper lists the people they are there for.  You see some "In memory of" and others "In celebration of" and there is often a long list of names.

Breast cancer hits one in every 8 women, and that means that few people have not had a close friend or family member who has had it. The goal of the race is to raise funds to cure it and then to prevent it.

The race goes through the town first

The Race for the Cure is held all over the country, and Susie attends many of them.  She runs in all she attends.  In the Aspen race she came in first in her age group.  She has been to races in Washington, DC, Greeley, Denver, and will be attending the next one in September at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.  I know she has been to the Aspen race at least 10 years, and perhaps more than that.

The walk continues through the park

I tried finding a date for the next Frisco, Colorado  Romp to Stomp out breast cancer and was only able to come up with last year's website.  I think it is a bit early yet.  Last year it was on March 10th, and I am guessing this year it will be around the same time.  I will update this blog post when I find the new date.

Joanne what a great event to participate in. My mother, one grandmother, and one great grandmother all survived breast cancer. It is so good when the communities get behind these events.

Joanne, I have always wanted to do the Breast Cancer Walk. Every year my children and I do the Relay For Life. We camp out and spend the night and walk the midnight and early morning, 1:00-4:00 a.m., shifts.

Wow Mana, I am impressed!  Why that particular shift?  I suppose it is something your kids will always remember because of the excitement that went with it, with the camping and walking in the middle of the night.  It is nice to raise your kids with a charitable kind of outlook, and I applaud you for it.

Joanne,  I'm very impressed that you take part in such an important event. The pieces of paper 'in memory of' and 'in celebration of' is an excellent idea. My Aunt (my Dad's only sister) is a survivor of breast cancer.  A few years ago we lost a well-loved sales representative in our office to breast cancer. A foundation has been started in her name.

Thank you from me,  for being such an inspiring and wonderful person,

Jo

What an AWESOME POST!!  I'm so proud you were "part of it!"  My grandmother was older when she got breast cancer and she survived!  I've never walked but it's part of my long time goal to walk the 3-Day in Tampa eventually.  Excellent post...I'm moved by your words and dedication to finding the CURE!

Joanne, this is such a great event. Susan G Komen is one of Remax's charities. We have races/walks at all the conventions. Thanks for covering this one in Colorado!

Joanne, thanks for taking part in this event.  I ran the National Race for the Cure in D.C. back in early June.  We had a team of about 25 people from our RE/MAX office there.  My mother is a breast cancer survivor so the race has a special meaning to me.  I also got interviewed at the race by the RE/MAX Satellite Network and appered on their news program.

Jo, it is an emotional event for so many people.  I still haven't been able to put anyone's names on my back but I have them with me.  We also lost our office manager to it this year as well.  Thanks for your support.

Susie, doing three days would be a huge thing to do!  My little 3.1 miles would be nothing in comparison!  However, it is all about the fund raising, and there is no better cause.

Missy and Brian, I had no idea that ReMax supported it and I think it is wonderful that they do.  I use the Breast Cancer stamps on all my mailings rather than running them through the meter.  It is something extra we can do, as a portion of each stamp price goes to the cause too.  They do cost more than the regular stamp, but with every one you stick on you are donating to Breast Cancer research.  It is definitely worthwhile.

Joanne, We do that shift because there are not a lot of people that walk at that time. There are several teams and usually that slot is pretty open.

Joanne, Race for the Cure is something near and dear to my heart as well.  I lost my grandmother and a dear friend to breast cancer.  I support it monetarily as well as taking part when possible.

Mana, it probably is a fun shift if you prepared with a nap!

Chris, It seems like everyone has lost someone close to them, from breast cancer.  But there are more postive stories today than there were years ago.

Cyndee, I hope all goes well with your friend, and next time you see the opporunity, go and run or walk!  Meantime use the breast cancer stamps as it lets people know you support the cause.

Stephanie, there are so many great causes out there that you can't do them all, so I decided to pick one main one, and this it!

Thanks to all for your comments.

Joanne,

Thanks for posting about this cause. I was unable to participate in ours this year but I did last year.I don't know anyone directly suffering from this, but my managing broker (my mentor) is on his 5th year of fighting colon cancer.

HI Chris, thanks for doing it last year!  My Mom died of colon cancer after battling breast cancer for about 8 years.  That was tough as breast cancer doesn't spread to the colon, so it was a whole new cancer.  I have known several people in their 30s and 40s who had it and it is a difficult cancer once it has gone very far.  I wish your broker lots of luck in his fight.

Paula, your support is so much appreciated by lots of people.
