Feeling Fat?

Real Estate Agent with J. Rockcliff Realtors (#01723588)

I hope this is not offensive to anyone.  But, is anyone feeling fat?  I started this business about 6 years ago, and I noticed that a lot of the more mature male Realtors were kind of chunky?  I thought to myself, why is this?  You work for yourself, you create your own hours, no one is the boss of you, (except maybe your wife), so why do you not have time to work out and keep in shape?  Well, I have been in the business for a few years, and now I know the answer.  I have gained almost 30 lbs.  WHAT!!. How can this be?

It's our lifestyle.  We have no set schedule.  We work at the whim of our clients and jump when they call.  We eat when we can, and not very healthy most of the time.  We work late into the night, snacking on things and eating dinner at 9:00 pm.  You try to go to the gym, but when you are done you have missed 13 calls and have buyers leaving messages saying that they will go to the next Realtor to help them buy that million dollar home.  Or you get up at 5:00 am to go work out, and it turns out that you missed your asset manager's call who works out of New York and it's 8:00 am for them, and you just missed that listing that you have been trying to get.

This is why we get fat.  We are at the mercy of the buyer, seller and other agents.  Or at least this is how I feel.  Maybe next week I will get back into the gym, maybe.

Bold but necessary post......I am sorry to say. I actually have to incorporate exercise into my schedule or my love of eating would catch up to me no problem. On the other hand, when I get real busy in my Real Estate, I dont have time to eat or if I do eat, eat well. I do know know that I am allowed 60 grams of fat per day, 2400 calories and all the protein I can stand. If I cross those barriers, the "weight" is WAITing for me. Thank you

Ha!! Funny you should post this.  I am thin, but definitely out of shape.  I have neglected taking a time-out for me to exercise these last few weeks.  I told my 14 y.o. son to hold my feet tonight while I did situps--one for each year of life.  I told him, "I'm NOT fat...but I'm feeling 'fluffy'"!! :)

You must have noticed the 3 donuts I had at this morning's sales meeting!

I gained several pounds right after I started in real estate about 8 years ago.  Because I was not making any money, I was always eating whatever the vendors and class and meeting sponsors were providing for free.

As an avid bicyclist and recreational racer, my weekly schedule has quite a bit of exercise in it, so I am maintaining w weight within 5-10 pounds of where I was when I graduated high school 25 years ago.  I find that this exercise makes me more able to concentrate on the tasks at hand, and better help my clients.

It was not a problem until last year when I was busier than I have ever been. Working out has to be an appt. on your calendar, It's the only way!

Steve - This is a timely post for me.  I have recently lost a bit of weight, but I have more to go.  I am headed out the door for a run right now (yes, really).

If you're not learning, you're not living!

Like I tell everyone that gets into the real estate business...you may never make any money in real estate, but you will NEVER starve to death!  We must be the most well fed profession in the world!  Third world countries could survive for decades off the enormous amount of crap that people give REALTORS to eat!!!  We should all have signs on the front of our offices that say "Please Do NOT feed the REALTORS!"  LOL!!!!

I quit smoking last year and gained some weight. My excuse now is that I'm too fat to excercise! blub blub. Seriously one of these days I'll get back to that gym before I get to the point of no return!

Steve, I'm right there with you, but today I began fighting back. Going to the gym regularly, but not controlling food intake was getting me nowhere. When you've 'had enough', things will change.

You have to make physical activity a priority. My asset managers don't call me at 5:00am. I jog at 6:00am up the road.(In Hawaii year round) & I take surf breaks during my lunch hour or from 4:00pm to 6:00pm when possible. It helps that my office is across the street from the beach. Make physical activity/fun a priority and look and feel better.

Steve - Our bodies are holy temples onto God.  I certainly can relate to the difficulties of jam-packed schedules, but I know I take care of my body through treadmill and yoga.  If I don't, then the stress builds up even more so.  Hope you can make it to the gym regularly.  Cherise

I hear ya!  I'm a new agent and was thinking "Oh, since I set my own hours I will be able to manage my schedule and fit in the gym and housework and work and and and and"  Not so much!  I find myself working 24/7 (loving it by the way) but I haven't been able to balance that with my personal life effectively yet.

Too funny, but true!  We need to create balance as someone said earlier and make time for the gym.

Just reviewing some of the great featured posts of the past today looking for inspiration and ideas for writing some new content for my lethbridge homes for sale blog.  This was a great featured post, especially on a night where I am sitting here thinking I need to join a gym again first thing monday.  I am a bit of a procrastinator, but really have put on weight due to my crazy work lifestyle.
