Ah, my puggle. I have a love/hate reltionship with my dog. He makes me laugh because of his facial expressions- He has a wrinkled forehead, buggy eyes and an underbite that make him appear ridiculous (but cute) at all times. He is also a real character. When he gets in trouble he will run and hide, then roll over and put his paws in the air as if he's playing dead- apparently in the hope I will suddenly feel sorry for him and not put him in his bed for a "time-out." But overall, he's a good, friendly companion.
However, if he doesn't get enough attention or exercise, he will act up- usually by destroying something around the house. Sometimes it's a shoe, sometimes a box of Kleenex... Yesterday it was a blanket my wife had bought in Ireland. I was fuming mad!
I blamed the dog for just being "bad", while my wife was more stoic about it. She said it was really our fault because we hadn't played with him much or taken him for a walk for a couple days. As usual (I grudglingly admit), my wife was right: If we'd given the puggle the care he needed, the blanket wouldn't look like Swiss cheese.
Thinking about it today, there are a lot of aspects of our lives that are like my puggle. If we don't give our work, our clients- or any potential problems- the care they require, then they may revolt. Today, I am taking stock at my office of everything I need to do. Are there colleagues I haven't spoken with in a while? I should maintain my connections with them in case I need their help. Have I spent enough time lately with my coworkers, keeping up the rapport that is so necessary for a cohesive workplace? Have I made sure the company's clients are happy, and have been contacted recently? I want to be certain that everyone has the equivalent of a good scratch on the head and a walk around the block, so that we don't end up with the business equivalent of a shredded blanket.
