Don't you wish - that a Twinkie a Day would make the calories go away?  No such luck... 2 of those creamy-yummy-sticky spongecakes, and all their 300 glorious calories may not be sensible - but I'll bet they can put a smile on your face :-)  And guess what? The Hostess Twinkie turns 80 today!

James Dewar, a bakery manager in Chicago came up with this shelf-staple and American icon...Hostess cranks out some 500 million of these soft, spongy cakes every year, nutritionally suspect calories that contribute nothing to a sensible diet but a sense of delight.

Indeed, in some social circles, a romantic partner who is sweet, youthful and good-looking but devoid of actual substance is known as a "Twinkie." And like with men, true freedom includes the right to make bad choices.

So here's to you, Spongy King!

I have not had one in over 10 years...but they are an American original!  I would probably have one every once in a while if their shelf life wasn't so long...

Liz,

I loved those things as a kid in grade school.

This is my theory on Twinkies, if they are the only "known" food that would survive a nuclear war, than eat as many as possible so with the help of twinkies you to can become immune to Nuclear war!! TWINKIES ARE GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Liz, I once saw a cartoon of an Egyptian servant wheeling cases of Twinkies into one of the Pharoah's tombs! I have never forgotten it. I think the point was either how popular they are, or that they have so many preservatives they will never go bad!

Thats right! Twinkie birthday. I used to think eating one a day would be a good idea. I now look down and see that was not such a good idea, 20 lbs later...

Hi Liz, It's my mom's birthday today also.  I will have to tell her the Twinkie is older than her.  She will be happy.  I used to take Jos Louis's to school in my lunch when I was a kid.  Can't say I was ever a Twinkie fan.

Go and watch the character Tallahassee (played by Woody Harrelson) in the movie Zombieland.  His only desire was to get a Twinkie.

Shame these guys got such a bum rap after the murder of Georged Moscone and Harvey Milk. A media guy came up with it because of the defense's claim that he was on a sugar rush.

Youthful and good-looking but devoid of actual substance is known as a "Twinkie."  Really I did not know that.

I figured someone would mention the "twinkie defense."  (Way to go, Jane) I grew up in San Francisco and remember it well.

Personally I was a Hostess cupcake man, but Twinkies were a close 2nd.

80 years for the Twinie... who knew? I always liked the hostess cpcake over the twinkie but still.... they say they never rot... so I like Stacys answer.... if you eat enough maybe you will be preserved too! now that is a concept... Sweet Post!

Zombieland...good movie!

Can't say I ever like Twinkies either, but I never really got into any of those cakes. Give me a homemade fudge brownie anyday :)

Too bad I didn't read this before my trip to the store this morning.  I'd have picked a twinkie instead of the almond m&m's I just ate.

What a fun post Liz!  I like Twinkies, but it's been a long time since I had one.  Happy 80th anniversary to the Twinkie!

Now you've made me hungry for a Twinkie, and I haven't had one since I left Texas on April 15, 1993. I've been so good about eating more sensibly. Hmmm. Maybe I can fit a Twinkie into my evening meal as dessert.

I was never a big Twinkie fan.  Hostess chocolate cupcakes were my favorite treat :)

Liz:  Years and years ago I sold a home to a young couple.  The hubby drove a delivery truck for the bakery company that made Twinkies in the Dallas area.  During one of the times we were together, I talked about how much I loved Twinkies.  The next time we met... he brought me a present.  A box of three-dozen-Twinkies.  Of course, over a two day period or so, I ate every single one of them.

I think it took me about an entire year before I was able to even LOOK... at another Twinkie.  Yikes !
