Tower Park - Brentwood, TN...
One of the newest parks to the Brentwood, TN park system is Tower Park located in the shadows of the Historic WSM Radio Tower off Concord Road. This 47 acre park located on the banks on the Little Harpeth River was opened to the public in 2005. This park contains large meadows, multi-use fields, and walking and bike paths. Tower Park may serve as a connector route for a proposed bike/walking path between Granny White Park and Crockett Park.
Some little known facts about WSM and Tower Park:
Long before Brentwood, became a city (1969), the WSM tower was built (1932) mainly due to its central location geographically. The bedrock formed the perfect base to support this impressive structure.
The WSM tower at one time was the tallest transmitting tower in the United States (878 feet), and the 2nd tallest in the world. The Eiffel tower was taller.
The massive 2-1/2 cables that support the tower weigh 8,000 pounds each.
The small building at the base of the tower not only houses the transmitters, but also includes a bomb shelter and a direct link to the White House and the President of the US.

Tower Park is located across from the new Sports Complex. To reserve one of the sports fields, call the Brentwood Parks department at 615.370.3471.

Ah yes remember when we had bomb shelters and civil defense...
Your friend from Washington State,
Paul
Michael, we have a bomb shelter in White Sulphur Springs where the President and his cabinet were to go if needed be...was suppose to be a secret....word got out and now is used as part of the Greenbriers tour package, as well as storage for some agencies.
Looks like a very nice area. I was born in Memphis but I have never been to Brentwood.
Michael - interesting information, and very cool presentation with your photo collage.
Great information on WSM Tower and park. I wonder how the tower stacks up against some of the ones of today?
Hi Michael, Very cool facts! Sounds like a great park to walk and bike around. We have very little parks around here that are that large. The large ones are only state parks. I love parks!
Hi Michael - haven't heard talk of a bomb shelter in ages! You sure have lots of nice parks around there! Your collages are very nicely done, too :)

Wow - I can't imagine why they would need a direct link to the white house, but then again, a lot of stange people now live in the white house. Who know what goes on.
Good planning by your parks department to integrate existing parks with Tower Park. So if I need to get a message to the White House, I could just text you and you could relay it for me? :)
Michael,
I popped in tonight, first time in two days, man the system is cooking tonight.
Michael...Very cool pictorial! Also, interesting history of the WSM Tower. I'd forgotten about bomb shelters.
