59 Comments on Just How Far Can The Airlines Push Us?
Maybe the solution is to wear several layers of clothes... just kidding. I used to love flying, now it's more a necessary evil...
Hi Debi, I heard on that same report that they MIGHT start charging to use the restroom! Ok - so we can put on all of our outfits on top of one another - wear our luggage so to speak and just be sure our carry-on fits under the seat. No extra fees :-) OH and just in case, don't drink anything, in case they do start charging for the restroom LOL
Shipping your stuff ahead could be an answer, and the layering is a good idea - BUT then if you did have to go the restroom - you wouldn't fit in the darn thing!!!
Gabe - That's my idea - be reasonable & fair!!!!!!!!
Hi Debi! I saw that same show and was absolutely amazed that they continue to do this--they're killing us already with their prices and increased fees. In response to the layering--don't forget if we're over a certain dimension, we're charged for two seats too! LOL
Debi, flying is a big pain now-a-days. When I do fly, southwest or song are my preferred airlines. What I dislike the most, is the recirculating air. It was so much nicer when fresh air came into the cabin.
I think the answer would be to fly another airline. Vote with your wallet. The market is efficient.
Airline prices are a lot lower than they were years ago, and they are trying to survive. The increasing cost of fuel is very hard on the airlines bottom line.
We have to understand that they have to make money in order to stay in business. The best way to do it, in my opinion, is to increase the fares. However, the public doesn't want that, so they look at these back door methods.
I would prefer a 45 price increase instead of the charge for onverhead.
I heard one Bridish airline is going to charge about 1.5 pound to use the loo.
I don't care what they charge, I fly a lot and carry very little when I do. The carry-on bins are always packed to the gills so much they barely close. It's not just a few items being carried on board. I think this may be why the airlines are starting this. My only requirement from the airlines is that it's a safe flight and gets me to my destination.
Debi it is clearly abusive. Consumers have to sit back and suck it up daily as we are forced to stand by and be victims of this abuse of power.
Southwest Airline is the only one making a profit and is not charging unreasonable rates. I don't know how they do it, but the others need to take lessons!!
We always fly Southwest whenever possible. They need to expand their areas of service.
In the mean time I vote to get a large purse and ship the rest.
I hate it but I don't think it can be stopped - it's just their way of circumventing a price hike. If they didn't charge for the luggage, snacks, blankets, etc. then they would simply increase the cost of the ticket.
Debi - I heard the news and also the company was saying that their price is cheaper compare to others. So I am confused, if they are cheaper than other airline but charge for carry on bag then are they really competitive. Too bad, we can't just totally boycott the airline industry but we can certainly fly less. Everyone is trying to take advantage of this "down turn economy". Company is laying off staff to cut cost, cutting salary to help make the company numbers, price increase because raw material cost more....the list of excuse is on and on....
How about the CEO of these big company take less or give back their compensation? Some did but then they get some bonuses when they meet the "numbers". They could drive a less expensive car or not but that mansion on the beach..... everyone is to blame but the impact is more on us, those who are trying to make a living.
Southwest, Southwest, Southwest.....they are now a bit more expensive than everyone else, but I don't care. By the time you add $100 or more round trip, it's a deal. They don't charge for unaccompanied minors either. Just a great Airline all the way around.
Debi, it is rediculous. I heard them last night say they were doing it because they could load and unload the plane faster. Right.
Debi, Guess I am a Dinosaur...I don't fly. Living in a rural area, it just doesn't happen for us. Slower pace of life. All the negative news on flying just makes it easier to make a long drive or Ride (Motorcycles). Best of luck to you...Have a Great Week!
Debi - I too was outraged about this. Even more so that they would even think to start charging for use of the restrooms. I just came back from driving my son to the airport for a transatlantic flight. He does not a fly frequently, but being 6'3" he requested an aisle seat with some legroom and was hit with a $59.00 bill for the provelege. Seeing as there were no other free aisle seats, he was stuck with the charge. It seems these days that if we want to fly in comfort, it'll be costing us a hefty amount over and above the cost of a ticket. UGH!!
Would most people be reacting with this much outrage if they had just raised the ticket prices by the same amount? Probably not.
By most accounts, Southwest is managing quite well, with reasonable fares, and not implementing all these ridiculous extra charges. if this is so, why can't the others manage it? Unfortunately for me, Southwest does not fly out of Colorado Springs.
Debi
I do wish that they flew to Charlotte! I've flown them before from Denver to Dallas and loved their service.
I know what my husband would say: AMTRAK!
Business people won't mind paying it because they just charge it to the company, which then increases the cost of its products to us, the consumers. If businesses would do more teleconferencing, and vacationers would do more driving, we could put the airlines out of business, but then we'd miss them.
