Is Technology Responsible For The Dumbing-Down Of America? The story of Tom

vancouver wa real estateIt seems that everyday there is a new gadget that hits the market that promises to make our lives easier and more productive. PC's are replaced by laptops that are replaced by tablets which are soon to be replaced by iPads. Reports show that cell phone users aren't as concerned with calling ability as they are with ease of texting and surfing the net.

This technology looks great on the surface, but what is the real cost? Our kids, who have grown up with 500 satellite channels, cell phones with video chat, and 3D video game systems that have more power than the computers that launched our first mission to the moon, are suffering.

Suffering? You ask?

There is no reason to use our brains or imagination any more. Let's look at the story of Tom, an average boy, leading an average life with average friends. Tom had no cell phone, no laptop, and no video game system. He had shoes, but it is very well documented that he never liked to wear them. What he did have, was a legendary imagination that was the stuff that books are written about. Tom is an American Icon.

What would Tom have been if he had grown up in a world filled with our current technology? Let's take a peek:

Tom entered the following text into his Droid and pressed send, "Huck, I will teach you to paint a fence for your pet frog and those 3 marbles that you won yesterday."

"LMAO! Nice try. I already know how. I just Googled fence painting on my iPhone. Tweet the rest of the gang to find another sucker. " came the response.

"After that, maybe we can go hide from Injun Joe in the caves" Tom tried again.

"Just got Halo 3 for X-Box 360, so I will be busy for a few weeks. Wanna come over and watch?"

Dejected, Tom agreed to go play video games with his friend, Huck, and the rest was history. Another American youth is lost to the evils of technology. Tom started wearing shoes and asked his Aunt Polly to buy him a pair of $170 Air Jordans. He went to a technical school and majored in computer science. He now lives in a small single level home in Alhambra, California, with his wife and 2.5 kids, where he walks his dog every morning before going off to his 9 to 5 job as a computer network engineer.

Tom Sawyer is arguably one of America's favorite trouble making runaways. His imagination was his most valuable tool.

I tell you that to tell you this: Take the time to Exercise your imagination! Encourage your kids to go outside and play for a while.

Sad tale.  It still is more fun to get outside and play in the rain, the snow and the sunshine.  Encourage your kids to get outside and PLAY!

My son is in Panama City for the summer with a Christian organization receiving great teaching and doing mission work.  They are nowhere near a TV for 9 weeks!  (They are taken out of their motel rooms.)  I am so proud of the whole group of kids!

So great to remember the good 'ol days.  It's a rare scene to drive through my neighborhood and see kids playing outside anymore.  Even here at the beach, I saw a kid sitting in the sand playing one of those handheld gadgets.  Geez!

Excellent post. I'm sure my parents said the same thing about my generation when I was growing up, but wow, how things have changed in the last couple of years.

I had a kid today walk into my parked car while texting. Several months ago, my neighbor was run into by a kid texting and driving. Sometimes I wish we could ditch the technology, use the imaginations and live a bit simpler.

My kids are all about technology but I put a limit on how much they can use it, they are also require to spend x amount a time outside playing with their friends.

I couldn't agree more! I just got into a huge debate with some of my daughter's friends about how texting and Facebook has such a negative impact on their spelling ability. There's something seriously wrong when a twelve year old can't spell the word "wait" properly (she spelled it "wate"). I could have even understood if she typed "weight".  She proceeded to call me "elderly" and "old school" (I'm 36!!) I'm constantly monitoring my kids' Facebook and texting and think other parents should do the same.

Technology as everything else is a double-edge sword. It can do good if use properly and it could hurt you if used improperly.

Great Pst

Fbook,Twit, Bberry etc. have allowed me to be brief and boring and unintelligerbile....... let's see.....where is the speel ck on this damn thing.

I might be old school, but I prefer to deal with and associate with folks that can complete a full sentence, spoken or written, and have a thought that makes me think, but not find ways to disassociatemyself from sensibility and communication skills. Twitter is just that....it make those who rely on it, thinking it is a means of meaningful communication, ....well....a twit.

This is the conversation we were having yesterday coming back from our trip. I feel overwhelmed by so much information, my clients too...I appreciate and see the value on technology; however, my question is are we really "physically" prepared for so much information? How much can we really absorbe, retain, and use ? I feel many times the need of getting away, relax, and come back to my previous way of discovering and using things. Also, how can we "really" identify the experts comments from the simply opinions without sufficient validation or authority? Anyone has become an expert...dangerous matter...Coming back to this post, yes I think that without a balance between the use of technology and the preservation of creativity, we are at a high risk. So, get the children and "you" out and engaged in something else other than computers and phones. By the way, good luck with that...

Best,

Liliana

My kids got two hours total a day for any electronic device including computer, phone, and tv.  They luckily spent the time predominantly playing educational games like math blaster and grammer something or other. First I removed all the non educational games from computer though.   We also only get PBS in this here remote region, and I was sure not to buy any nintendos, nor cable, but my kids were so resourceful they went out at ages 10 and 12 and earned emough money to buy their own Nintendos and I hated those darn toys.  Wonder why attention disorder is on the rise?

Great blog post Mark! Parent's nowadays have much responsibility in encouraging their Children to play outside the home take art classes during summer and other fun activitites, we should not let them be on their pc's or psp's the whole day, it will not just take the imagination of the Children but also the social interaction with other kids and values they can learn in interacting with others. This is good reminder to all of the parents.

A great book is, "The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr". It's along the same lines but discusses learning in depth and how we are now 'snippet' driven in learning from internet searches and overwhelming amounts of returned hits to our searches.  Parts are a little tough to get through, but it is a thought provoking read.

The evils of technology?  We should embrace technology as it came from our brains in which you spoke of in your post.  And we are all using technology as we speak in this platform.  Technology is here to stay and it is advancing at a rapid rate.  What needs to change is behavior and use technology in a more intelligent useful manner.
