Every Thursday on the Avenue of the Fountains, just East of my office at ReMax Sun Properties we have our Farmers Market and Art Show. I'll try to get to the Art Show next week but this week it's on the Farmers Market.

Having Grown up on a Farm in Portage, Michigan, Farmers Markets are dear to my heart. In Fact as a kid, every summer we grew tomato, sweet corn and pumpkins to sell at our roadside stand.

Our Fountain Hills Farmers Market is small but gaining popularity. This week we had to produce stands. One was selling vegetables such as carrots, kale, turnips and tomatoes. The carrots were excellent! Having been raised on fresh tomatoes, well they beat the heck out of store bought. The other had a variety of citrus locally grown. Arizona is known for it's high quality citrus. My personal favorite is the Mineloa. It's a type of tangelo which is actually a cross between a Tangerine and a Grapefruit.

Some of the other great products we had this week at the Fountain Hills Farmers Market that I found particularly interesting was a Tempe Cheese Curd maker. It brought back memories of Poutinis (sp?) from my college days in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. For you folks not familiar with this Canadian Dish, its French Fries covered with cheese curds and Hot Brown Gravy. I don't believe this is on the National Heart Societies recommended diet but I could be wrong. The curd makers source for his dairy was from Wisconsin and he also had a variety of cheese from there.

Also features was an Arizona staple, Tamales!

I never liked Tamales until one day a dear Mexican friend of mine suggested that I unwrap it and just eat the innards. Since that day I've had a love affair with this traditional Mexican Christmas dish.

It was a beautiful day to wander the Fountain Hills Farmers Market and sample the fresh fudge and baked goods, the zesty Salsa, the rich local honey and some homemade tortilla chips before wandering down to the Art Show. Sunny and 80 is just perfect in my book.
