Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Beauty

The first time I heard of the phrase "Commit Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Beauty" was while reading an article in a Reader's Digest in the early 1980's.  As I recall, the movement was an "answer" to the many seemingly "random acts of violence" of the era.  There was a movie in 2000, "Pay It Forward", starring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt that was based on this principle.  If you are ever in the mood for a "good" movie, dig this one up, heres a clip.

It is a thought that has stuck with me over the years, and brought to the forefront of my consciousness this morning by a local Breakfast Television Program.  Apparently "Mars" (Mars chocolate bars) recently launched a Random Acts of Chocolate campaign, for more information visit: Mars Acts of Chocolate

There was a recent survey in Canada, and the results indicated:
1) A significant difference in the number of people reporting that they committed a Random Act of Kindness and those people that acknowledged receiving a Random Act of Kindness.  Approximately twice as many are giving out Random Acts of Kindness than are acknowledging receiving them (?)
2) Apparently women are more likely to commit a Random Act of Kindness than men
3) Older people commit more Random Acts of Kindness than do younger people

It doesn't take much to do something nice for someone for no other reason but to help another person, and you end up feeling better and with a much better attitude.  Like Saving Our Planet, its just the right thing to do...

Hmmmm.... I found an organization that promotes the philosophy, if this appeals to you, join the organization Random Acts of Kindness, change your life, and those whose lives you "touch" ... and then "Pay it forward" =)

Thanks for the post Chris...we could use more like this one. There is so much fear uncertainty and doubt in the world that there is always more room for random acts of kindness.

Well spoken our friend! We love this movie, in fact have several copies with the intention of passing them out if the receiver promises to 'pay it forward' by giving the movies to someone else after they watch it. Hadn't heard about the group so thank you for the link, will go join now. Sad about those statistics you gave but fear they are true! Just watch people for confirmatiion.

Actually there was a craze going on at Starbucks drive-throughs not too long ago where people would play-it-forward by prepaying the ticket of the person behind them in the line.

It's been around for a long time, but as we get busy with so many other things, we tend to forget...

Katina and Al&Peggy, I really liked the movie, own the DVD, and will dig it up and watch it again...

Thank You John, sometimes we all need that "gentle remider" to do the right thing =)

Wow, Michael, I had not heard of that... we can change the world... and it can start with just one deed.
