Facebook Fan Page for Gina Chirico Sales Associate, Prudential New Jersey PropertiesIt appears from this article that Facebook will soon change its "Become a Fan" to "Like" on all brand pages.  In essence it makes sense because are you really a fan of me, Gina Chirico, Sales Associate Prudential New Jersey Properties or do you like just like my real estate Facebook page? 

The truth of the matter is "Fan" taken literally means fanatic, and few people are fanatics about as many brands as they "like."  Are you really a fanatic of Gina Chirico Real Estate of Facebook or do you just like Gina Chirico Real Estate on Facebook?

 

Definition of Fan: Function: noun Etymology: probably short for fanatic Date: 1682

1 : an enthusiastic devotee (as of a sport or a performing art) usually as a spectator
2 : an ardent admirer or enthusiast (as of a celebrity or a pursuit) <science-fiction fans>

Definition of Like:  Function: verb Inflected Form(s): liked; lik·ing Etymology: Middle English, from Old English līcian; akin to Old English gelīc alike Date: before 12th century

1: to be suitable or agreeable to <I like onions but they don't like me>
2 a : to feel attraction toward or take pleasure in : enjoy <likes baseball>

Taking a quick snapshot of the pages I have personally fanned in my Facebook personal profile:

Am I really fanatic about the Facebook page I stay in my pajamas until I absolutely have to get dressed?  Not really , but I liked the name of the page.  Since fanning the page, I've hidden every update so it would not consume my wall!

Will Smith on the other hand, I am fanatic about!  I am a huge fanof Will Smith!

When you have been a victim of receiving drunk texts from friends, you will understand that I'm certianly not a fan of drunk texts, but I found humor I "liked" the Facebook Page Name but have hid all posts and updates on my wall. 

If any of you have children or grandchildren, nieces or nephews who watch Max and Ruby -- you will certainly get the humor of why I became a fan of the Facebook page Where in the hell are Max and Ruby's parents?  Again, not a really a fan but I liked the title of the Facebook Fan Page!

Quoting Scott Kleper, CTO for the San Francisco-based social marketing firm Context Optional, "Becoming a fan of a brand is perceived as a large commitment and is an important measurement metric... 'Liking' can be another great driver of awareness and an opportunity for users to show an additional form of affinity,".

So for those of you who have fans of your page or who have fanned pages on Facebook, what's your input?  Are you or you fans really FANATICS or simply just like what you read?

I also heard about the upcoming change.  "Liking" a page just doesn't resonate.  They need to come up with some other phrase for it.  I like the notion of "becoming a fan", or "becoming" something else.  They need a new "something else".  Something catchy that you can become.

Strange change.  I guess it goes with the "like" on comments.  But "fan" I guess is a little pretentious.  What have we done to deserve people becoming our fans.  Oh well, we will all just have to go with the flow.  We don't have a choice where Facebook is concerned :)

I agree Bob.  Hopefully they'll come up with something better than simply "like". 

Jane, I think that's where they got it from - the like button under a status update is used more frequently by users.
