Hello all: I'm going to apologize in advance to my fellow Active Rain colleague, Lori Cofer, as I'm blogging about my hometown, Pullman, Washington.
I spent the first 18 years in Pullman, with the exception of when my father, a university professor, was on sabbatical for two years. I love my small town and still do.
At the time, I was actually born in Moscow, Idaho as the baby doctor there delivered about half the kids in Pullman. What hasn't changed is the small town feel of Pullman. Home to Washington State University, the population of Pullman is still under 30,000 even counting the 18,000+ students.
Suffice it to say Pullman is a downtown on essentially one street (Main) that runs into Grand. There is one major high school with a fairly set enrollment of about 800 students. My graduating class had about 200 and we all knew each other a bit.
The last time I was in Pullman was for my 30th high school reunion. Although parts of the town have been built out with new housing and retail developments, the part where I grew up had not changed at all. And even though I left Pullman when I was 18 to go away to college, I am forever grateful that I grew up there. The small town values cannot be overlooked. Where else can someone learn to look someone in the eye, shake their hand, and have a deal? Yes, I know. There are other places. I just have a huge affinity for my small town.
I wish I could get back more. My dad still lives there for part of the year and I love the drive; especially the last 50 miles or so through the rolling wheat fields. Recently a bunch of us got together over beers here in Seattle. All of us grew up in Pullman and we were reminiscing about what an idyllic life it was. If you ever get the chance, I encourage you to visit. In my mind, Pullman and that area of Washington State is magical! Have a great day!
