If you are planning on sodding or re-seeding or re-sodding your lawn, why not consider a environmentally friendly solution that just might end up saving you time and money while helping to Save Our Planet?  Once entrenched, these fine leaved, deep rooted grasses do not need watering, grow slower (thus requiring from 1/3 to 1/4 the mowing of regular grasses and can be left without mowing all year), and because of their deeper and thicker root base, naturally fend off weeds.

Conventional Grass seed and sod is a mixture of Kentucky Blue grasses and other grasses that are not native to our environment.  They feature a broad leaf and very short root structure that is very prone to drought damage.

Environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional grass are:
1) Various companies sell mixtures of rye grasses and fescues that are indigenous to our region and climate. The main differences are that the individual blades of grass are thinner and that their root structure is much deeper.
I have seeded the lawns of two homes with this grass and find that the grass is much softer to walk on.  The seed costs more than "regular" grass seed, but once the roots are entrenched this grass becomes much more cost effective, much less time consuming to maintain, and much better for the environment.
Two companies selling such a product in Canada are:
      Green Earth  and Wildflower Farm

2) Consider Clover or a clover/grass mix.  Clover grows in our climate without any additional assistance, is hardy, is good for local fauna (bees and other insects) and is environmentally friendly.  Clover can also aid in the natural (non-pesticide) control of chinch bugs.

More information on these grasses and clover can be found at:  alternative grasses and clover, fescues

By the way,  Considering planting trees?

Plant Deciduous trees to the South and the West of your home.  The Shade from the leaves will help keep your home cooler in summer and when the leaves fall, the sun passing through can help warm your home in the winter =)

Chris,

These are good alternatives to the regular options. However, all the old options are still available in Quebec.
