The largest bird in North America, the majestic whooping crane, makes it's winter home the The Aransas Wildlife Refuge in Rockport, TX. Standing 5 feet tall with 7.5 ft. wingspan, these birds are making their way back from near extinction. Residents and visitors can see these rare birds in various fields north of Rockport, TX. These pictures were taken in a pond on the Lamar peninsula, near Goose Island State Park. Blue crabs are the favorite food of the whooping crane and provide them with the protien and nutrients they need to strengthen their bodies for the long migration back to Wood Buffalo area of Canada.

Rockport, TX, also called The Texas Riviera, is located 30 mi. north of Corpus Christi, TX. It is home to the Aransas Wildlife Refuge, winter home of the endangered whooping cranes, which can be seen in the area feeding on blue crab and wolfberries. Goose Island State Park, is located on the Lamar peninsula just north of the Copano Bay causeway. Waterfoul hunting, fishing and water sports are favorites there.
