WANT TO BE A MANAGER.....THINK AGAIN........ITS HARD WORK

When we use the word manager nowadays, one thinks of the perks and the extra money that goes with the title. But the word itself....Manager comes from the word MANAGE which is intended to mean the supervision and caring of other people, places, and things.

This is a tremendous ........responsibility to both your employer, your fellow workers and the consumer public. What a manager does or does not do AND how they do it will determine just how well things will or will not end up.

A manager is and agrees to be.... a cheerleader, coach, nurturer, counselor, guide, supporter, teacher, and have a giant ear and a extra large heart. They are responsible for their peers and their well being, but there is more...

The owner of a company.... relies on that manager to be their eyes and ears and to carry out and enforce their policies and procedures. A Good manager is well respected and treated because owners and department heads know what value they bring and what a difference they make.

The public has a right...... to expect a certain level of treatment with courtesy every time they visit the work place. They also know that they will be guaranteed satisfaction if they have to involve a manager. So, the manager is a necessary player and accounts to the people above them, the people they work with and to the people they serve.

Its hard work...., long hours and thankless scenarios that enter into a managers life. But, a good one is worth the perks and the extras if they deliver the goods.

So......you want to be a manager?           Please do...... only if you have what it takes!

I think the best thing that prepared me for being a Realtor was being a Manager for a couple of decades at Borders Books and Music. Retail sales with some of these people buying a $6.95 novel can really be interesting. One woman bought a soft-cover novel, took it home and read it, and brought it back the next weekend with spine creases and dog-eared pages. She wanted her money back because she didn't like the ending of the novel. We had to politely decline.

This post was very timely for me Richie because I ran into my old broker today.  He asked me how I liked being the Broker of my own business.  I told him I loved it, but I now understood how hard it was to manage everyone.  We had a good laugh as we reminisced about me giving him a hard time over the way he managed his company.  It was good to see my old friend and we departed warmly.

Now I'm reading your post and I feel compelled to completely agree.  The reason a Manager might get paid a little more is because they do all these extra things to keep the team motivated. Being a cheerleader, coach, nurturer, counselor, guide, supporter, teacher, and have a giant ear and a extra large heart describes someone who is worth every penny to the team and the brokerage...but especially the client!

Jim.....Well there is a common denominator in your post....called people. Thousands of years ago, we just traded goods for services or goods. Really didn't matter about the person selling it. Now, people buy from people first, then the product. You never know what to expect when you interact, but management is a fast introduction to the subject as your comment proves. BTW, I love customer stories. Thank you

Vic...things go full circle if you let them. When they do, we learn the whys and the how's which are the building blocks of life. I liked your story and how you now see your old brokers point of view as well as your own.....your conclusion....a laborer is truly worthy of his wages and managers do labor. Thank you Vic for the share.

It always amazes me when people claim that the manager does nothing.

Sometimes, they're right, but most people who've never managed usually don't have any way of being able to relate.  If I can't relate to what you do, then you must not be doing "real" work.

As usual, excellent points, Mr. Richie.

Chris.....I have seen hard-working managers and the first thing you see is a hard working manager if they are that person. Managers only have time to solve problems and support staff, they are too busy for anything else. Sometimes the observer of an event is seeing them-self.

Be well....

I'm not sure that I fully follow what you just said, Richie.  Would you be kind enough to paraphrase that?  (I have a feeling that you made a wise statement, and I don't want to miss your point.)

Chris...thank you for allowing me to clarify...... and comment further

You said in your first sentence of your post..."It always amazes me when people claim that the manager does nothing." I say....if they see that clearly in someone else, it could really be themselves they are talking about and not the person they are observing. Think...it takes one to know one application. Consequently, when you see a hard working manager (or anyone), you are able to see that too... and that very well could be yourself you are talking to or it could be a wake up call for you to become that person since you have it in you to recognize it in others. I see many things throughout the day, week, month, year and my life, but I always ask myself, What does that mean to me? In this way I gain and I prosper because of this....
