Ficus Tree revisited

Ficus Tree

I earlier blogged about our ficus tree returning to the deck hoping for some revitalization and renewal. I decided to further explore how to best care for this tree. I learned much at this site.

There were things I intuitively understood, but which were confirmed. Having as much natural light is necessary for the ficus tree. During the winters in PA it is somewhat difficult to provide that light. Has anyone ever used other lighting means over the winter to help provide more light for the ficus tree? Was it successful?

Another thing I learned which is important is to not water the tree with water treated by chemicals. Our tap water which has been the means of water is part of the problem over the winter. I will need to get other water during the next season of our ficus tree's indoor life.

This reminded me how important it is to actually learn about the things with which one is involved. I need to commit myself to being a life-long learner, especially in the field of real estate. This will help me better serve my clients. Thanks to my ficus tree for prompting me to learn something new today.

Hi Cal, In my experience, ficus are a bit finicky.  For one thing they seem to get distressed when they are moved.  I had one for years and it would be full and healthy, then I moved it and it looked like it would die.  It came back but the next time I moved it, the same thing happened.  After a number of years, I gave it to my daughter and it did the same at her home, but it always came back.

I have two Ficus trees named Mr and Mrs Ficus.  Mr Ficus has been in our family for 20 years and Mrs Ficus has been around about 12.  This winter was the first time that they have looked a bit sad.  With spring approaching it is time for some fertilizer (worm poop) and some new potting soil to hopefully bring them out of their depression.

Cal:

Interesting that you would write this blog today and that I would see it.  Our ficus tree just made the journey back out to the patio earlier today.  Of course it left a trail of leaves down the hall to the back door.

It always drops leaves when moved but always gets more after the move.  I had not heard that about the water.  We always water with the garden hose if we are short on rain.  Thanks for the tip.

Susan,

Thanks for your perspective. I did learn that the ficus tree is pretty resiliant and that is why they are so popular.

Cindy,

Great to hear about your trees. One thing I learned in this research, "Is the ficus likes to be root bound." I probably also have the tree in too large a container for its size.

Monique,

I must start by saying that I really like that name. I do not know many Moniques. Sorry to hear you were unsuccessful with your tree, but glad to hear it is prospering.

Barbara,

Yes that trail of leaves is predictable and the sun outside from now till fall will also bring the ficus back to life. Good luck with your tree.

I love your adventures of the ficus tree!  I bought a dying sago palm about 6 years ago for $5 at Lowes and the thing is still in need of tender loving care and just got transplanted yesterday.  It went from a baby at about 4 inches tall to now being about a foot tall and round :)  I am so proud of it!
