Did you get a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree when starting out?

For me, I came from a previous career in sales when my bank job folded up.  I read a study that says 51% of agents have a bachelor's degree or other advanced degree.

Are you a well educated agent?  I do frown at the fact that I don't have this advanced degree part but I have taken many advanced classes that I think help set me apart.

Have you obtained a bachelor's degree and how has this helped your business, please share what it did for you.  I would love to hear about it.

Tom - Interesting post!  Yes, I have a B.S. degree in Communications but quite honestly, I haven't given it much thought for many years now.  Has it helped me in my business?  Yes, but probably not for what you may think.

I graduated from college in my early 20's and by the time I graduated, I had learned how to set goals as well as learned how to develop the discipline required to fulfill those goals.  I learned the feeling of achieving accomplishments and how this can build confidence and foster healthy self-esteem.  College also taught me how to motivate myself in order to achieve my goals.

All of these are things I learned aren't things that I necessarily learned in any textbook or lecture hall but rather a day in day out process of going to school, completing my courses and earning the credits it takes to get a degree.  Have these things helped me out in my mortgage career, yes but not because of anything I learned in a book or a classroom.

So basically Donne, your saying that the on the job work has taught you a bit and helped to develop these skills but the college did help teach you mtivation.

Great post!  Appreciate the comment very much!

Thank-you, Tom Davis

Tom: I have a degree in marketing and PR from UNC- Chapel Hill. I know that the journalism teachers who helped us learn to write well have been invaluable, but can say that I have learned more about marketing properties from my broker, mentors and the Coldwell marketing team. I am glad I had 4 more years of education post high school as it did help to narrow down my career choices, but on the job training in this business is important too! You can of course take advanced courses in real estate and get a GRE, CRS etc.  Good luck to you!!!

Tom - I would have never had the ability to make it in this industry had I not already had the discipline and motivational skills that required me to succeed.  While my eight years in this business (as well as my 15yrs in my previous career) improved my skills and abilities, I learned the foundation of these skills and abilities when I was in college.  I have just spent the last 20+yrs honing and improving my skills and abilities.

My suspicion, Tom, is that college makes sense IF you have a specific game plan in mind.

When I went to school, I figured that I'd never stop.

Now that I've stopped going to college (many years ago), I realized that good quality seminars provide me relevant information that I need a lot more quickly than college usually does.  Often, the seminars seem to be expensive, but I realize that my time is worth a lot, too.  Plus, I can pick and choose the seminars that I want to take.  In college, you only get so many "electives."

You mention that you regret not having an advanced degree.  What do you think obtaining an advanced degree would enable you to do or accomplish that, without it, you could not?
