Writers block

Is there anyone on Activerain who hasn't experienced writer's block?

Whether you're a brand new member or have hundreds of thousands of points, there are some days when inspiration seems to be on sabbatical.  Your brain is absolutely void of ideas.  When that happens to me, I start reading...

FIVE SOURCES FOR BLOG TOPIC IDEAS:

  1. Both my personal and business email accounts have folders labeled "blog ideas" - announcements from local organizations, county government, and the like.  I subscribe to these notices for just such an occasion and sometimes never use them, but they often provide inspiration for a blog post or two.  Even a junk-email ad could trigger some activity in your brain!

  2. Local government websites have been the sources of interesting blog topics for me such as a police boat auction, an annual fishing contest sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources, leaf pick-up guidelines, the new county website for findHead - istockphoto.coming everything from the nearest recycling center to the nearest library.  And school websites always have something new since the last time I looked - teacher of the year, volunteer of the week, announcements, test scores... the list is endless.

  3. Other Activerain posts often inspire, too, so start reading and commenting.  I may disagree with the author or wish to add a different perspective but, when my comment on their post becomes too long-winded, I'll just cut and past it into a new post.  Sometimes it's even the comments that inspire, so don't overlook reading the comments when you read a post.

  4. Random websites can sometimes provide blog fodder, as well.  My daughter read a job announcement for Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, and clicked through to learn a little about Lewisburg.  One of the features on that website was "Ten fun things to do in Lewisburg" and she sent me a link to it because she thought it looked like a great place to live.  I thought so, too, but realized we have plenty of fun things to do in our area - and my series "Fun things to do in Bowie MD" was born.  (Check it out!)

  5. Newspapers, magazines, or even junk mail could get your wheels turning, so read, read, read.  Sometimes the things that annoy you most are the ones that awaken the most passion in your writing... and subsequently, in comments by those who read your post.

There are many other sources of blog topics, but this list should help get you started the next time you experience writer's block

Try it, and let me know if reading more helps your blog-writing.

Margaret, those are great ideas.  I guess the question is, do you feel like you have to write very day?  I use to, and found my blogs shifted from quality to quantity.  I've stopped blogging daily, and now write when I have an idea that excites me.  I DO SUFFER FROM SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS, and benefit from writing my idea down, like you.  If I have writers block, I don't sweat it, and enjoy the break until something passionate comes to me.

I find that my local paper is a fantastic jumping off point for some posts, especially articles in the real estate section.  If I don't agree with the perspective, that's even better because it allows me to present both sides of an argument.

Great advise!  Lisa: I read the paper too and ask others for ideas. I try to write one blog a week as I have a day job and it is hard to do much more.

It's pretty funny that you wrote this because that is exactly what I do when I find it hard for me to write new items.

Ed - Haha... that sounds like me.

David - Good idea!

Lenn - Haha...

Jim - To answer your question, I try very hard to maintain a M-W-F schedule on my outside blog, and it helps that I can use "Blogjet" to write when I have time and post on schedule.  In an ideal world, I would post something on Activerain 2-3 times per week - the most I can realistically fit in, along with being a moderator for a couple of groups.

Lisa - I love your local posts, and I can see where they might be inspired by something you read in the local media.

Sussie - Just be consistent...  Once a week is fine.

Bill - Great mnds think alike, right?

Margaret, I can't even imagine you ever getting writers block!  I've followed your blogs for the 2 years I've been playing in the Rain...  But you are right reading does nudge the old noggin.  I find also when I'm out in the market I get inspired too - just start taking pics and see what story comes with it!

Never have writer's block but have huge timing blocks. My listings, contracts and settlements get in the way of my time on ActiveRain.

You always give such good information to share with us.

Lee & Pamela - Does this mean you haven't missed me?  Haha... haven't had time for blogging, and it's really hard to get re-started.

Margaret - Where's your photo?  That's exactly my issue - time.  And when I sit down to try to hammer out something for Activerain, I draw a blank.  I don't have time to think OR write these days.  In fact, I haven't gotten around to doing my Wednesday post yet for FocusOnCrofton.com, which is my priority.

Margaret, I like many of the others can't hardly imagine you having writers block! I just had a major dry spell where the thought of writing was almost irrating. I've adjusted my attitude and hopefully will get back into the swing of things! :)

These are great tips, Margaret.  I took the lazy route today and just re-blogged your article because you said it well.  I really appreciate how you keep your posts so local - that really works well to keep our name in front of buyers on the internet, too.    Bonnie

Margaret,

Reading always helps me become re-inspired (is that a real word?). I especially like another little practice to trigger the creative juices... I look at old photo albums and journals.

I believe that we all have great stories inside us. We've already written the movies in our mind. We may have already shared our experiences with others in passing. After some years in this business, I forget!!! I know stuff! The photos are memory joggers and always spark an idea.

What da ya think Margaret?

Sergio - Usually when there's a new comment on an old post, it's spam doing its best to sneak through unnoticed.  YOU and your comment were, therefore, a pleasant surprise.  I couldn't sleep this morning, after bad news about a dear friend and client, so I thought I'd spend a little time catching up on email - sure enough, I've found 2 or 3 blog topics just waiting for me to discover them.  Thanks for the comment, Serigio
