Blog categories - Where should I put my post?

Here's a description of the various categories blog posts can be put assist others in finding them.  There is no requirement to add a post to a category, or sub category.  If you don't feel you post fits in one of the categories don't add it, people can still view your post.  Many posts may fit in more than one sub category, but choose the one that fits best.

For Real Estate Professionals: Posts who's target audience is others in the real estate industry such as agents, loan officer, title, etc.  Do NOT add posts that are indended for buyers and sellers here, as it will just frustrate members who want to read real estate information.

  • ActiveRain Community: Posts dealing specifically with some facet of the ActiveRain Real Estate Network.  Such as posts about features, improvements to the system, discussions among members, etc.  For instance this post was added to the ActiveRain Community sub category.
  • Industry News: Posts dealing with a current event in or effecting the real estate industry.
  • Tips, Tricks and Advice: Posts that share knowledge about some facet of the industry.  How do you improve marketing, what's the correct way to do this or that.
  • Real Estate Opinions:
  • Off Topic, humor:
  • Advertising: Blatent advertising, whether we want it or not people will still post it, so we might as well make sure it's properly categorized as such so people can choose to filter it out.

For Consumers: Posts who's target audience are buyers and sellers.  Do NOT add posts here that are intended mainly for others in the real estate industry.  These posts will be displayed regionally to buyers and sellers.

  • General Information: General non regional information for buyers and sellers.  For instance a post on the advantages and disadvantages of different loan types.
  • About a region: A post describing a certain state/county/city.
  • Regional News and Events: News or events happening in a certain state/county/city.
  • Market Reports: A market report about a certain state/county/city
  • Advertising a Listing: Blogging about a listing or set of listings, add these here.

If you have any questions/comments please add them here...

Should the listing blogs have some kind of expiration date built in to them?

10/21/2006 03:23 PM by Maureen Francis & Dmitry Koublitsky, SKBK Sotheby's - Metro Detroit (SKBK Sotheby's International Realty)

On listing blogs, I'd suggest that the blogger put the expiration date into his calendar to delete it, or put it in an Activity List so that when it sells you can either add the sales information, edit the post, or delete it.

Thanks for putting all this effort into making these changes us guys.  I think it will help us all categorize our content better and help consumers find what they are looking for faster.  Great work on such a fast turn-around.

Oh my God... if you guys keep adding on to this thing we are all going to have to go and get a Degree at ARU. (Active Rain University!)

Hmmm... maybe THAT has been the plan after all. Have I stumbled on how the heck you guys are gonna make some money with this beast?

Thanks guys, perfect for both the posters/bloggers and readers. I love how Active Rain keeps getting better and better, week by week.

This helps....

I have one question. What category would I put this in?  Example.... I did a blog on the screaming cell phone. It talked about a new service for cell phones. But this was meant for everyone...the public, realtors, loan officers.  Where would I put something like that?

 thanks, jeff

Ade HouseDoes it make sense to re-categorize my blog entries or are you doing that? If neither takes place, how/where are you going to show blogs submitted prior to this blog category change (which I think is a good one :-) ?

10/21/2006 06:12 PM by Gerhard Ade (Brio Realty)

Gerhard: If you want to recatagorize consumer content you can but it's not a big deal.  All the old catagories mapped pretty well to new ones.

Thanks for the details! It just keeps getting better.

And, I just noticed that in addition to points you've included how many blogs written; how many comments made. Interesting.

Any correlation? Are the top blogs due to content or comments?

10/22/2006 01:19 PM by Eileen Landau, ABR, CRS, e-PRO (Realty Executives, REALTORS)

You are making a lot of great changes keep it up. How do you get a gold star?

10/22/2006 01:52 PM by Christine Adler (RE/MAX Hometown)

Eileen: The top blogs listed are based on a combination of comments, user ratings, and a few other factors.

Christine: Gold stars mean we've featured one of your blog posts, to show on the front page of the site.

That is the age old question asked by all Sellers.

I suggest they avoid the water pipes.......

Thanks for all the new categories.  With so many choices I ought to be able to find a categroy for just about everything.  Now if you could just put in a spell checker so I don't have to copy paste all the time I would be greatful.

10/23/2006 07:45 AM by Teresa Boardman (Keller Williams)

Thanks for the great improvement in the categories.  I am new to your website so please excuse me if I am missing something.

Is there anything in the works for addressing listings that are in one geographical area but you want investors or buyers from all parts of the globe to know about the listings?

My listings are going to be in Kansas but the buyer may be from California.  I don't want to limit the geographical area of the listing by checking the Kansas box since other states and even other counties and cities will miss the post if it is too pigeon-holed to just Kansas or just Lawrence Kansas.

The same goes for my blogs about local financing since a buyer from California who wants to buy a home in Lawrence Kansas should be able to see my posts so they can know what to expect regarding local financing options.  For now, I am not using the region boxes until I understand the sorting process better.

I think that these categories will make things a lot easier for finding the material that a person wants to read.

I have a question - how do you post to communities?  It states no ne has posted, but when I attempt to, I can't figure out how to do it.  Any insight??

Great information, but how do i get a blog into the newbie section. I am somewhat lost here.

05/31/2007 11:15 AM by Bob Van Deusen (Coldwell Banker Mt West Real Estate)

I am pretty clear on the Localism categories, but when I'm trying to reach all the RE Professionals on AR what category should I choose - Advertising?

Thanks in advance!

Have not really known how this is set up, and this information helps. Now I think we can get posts into the right categories, at least.

Thanks for clarifying the intended purpose of each of the Blog categories, this information should be very helpful to Newbies and Old Timers alike.
