A friend of mine came into town on Friday night and had a hankering for something local, yet something “a little different than traditional southern New Mexico food.” I thought about it for a bit and decided that Delicia’s Del Mar would be the perfect place to take her.

Though located in the heart of the southwest, the flavors of their food evoke a subtle traditional Mexican flavor with their use of corn, cabbage, cucumber salsa, and an array of seafood dishes like shrimp cocktails and fish tacos. The ambience of the restaurant is also quite unique, sort of reminds me of something from a movie with its Mexican décor and a mariachi that drifts around the restaurant taking song requests.

This combination of the restaurant’s atmosphere combined with the 80 degree temperatures we hit earlier in the day definitely put us in the mood for a margarita. I ordered mine on the rocks, my friend ordered hers blended—hey for $4.50 we thought we might as well try both kinds and then decide whether we’d get a second one (why not—It was Friday!). As the server was walking towards our table we thought for sure that those couldn’t be our margaritas, because they were way too big to be the $4.50 ones. Sure enough, they were ours!!

Oh my, they were amazing margaritas–just enough salt on the rim, cold, tangy with a real subtle taste of Jose Cuervo Gold. They definitely weren’t strong margaritas, which was nice because we were looking for something more on the refreshing side. And the best part about them was the way they went so well with the food we ordered; I had the garlic tilapia served on a bed of seasoned rice and a small Mexican salad, and my friend had the fish tacos with a bowl of caldo de res soup.

One thing’s for sure—we’ll be back for another round! Two margaritas, garlic tilipia, fish tacos, caldo de res, and all the chips and salsa we could eat all for less than $30!
