Is your head in the sand?

Sometimes, when I'm telling a story to one of my clients, I'll try to make a point about how we often "stick our heads in the sand" whenever we don't want to face a certain reality.  In fact, I usually start out my story with, "You know how an Ostrich sticks its head in the sand, blah, blah, blah."

Most folks get the point of the story of the Ostrich.  They know that Ostriches stick their head in the sand when they are being chased by a predator.  Or at least they think they know.

Guess what? Ostriches don't stick their heads in the sand when being chased by a predator.  They run like hell or just lie close to the ground.  This whole head in the sand thing is a myth, and quite frankly, I'm a little disappointed. I like using the analogy of the head in the sand thing to get my point across. In fact, I'm going to use it now.

The first principle of SimpleEconomicsTM  is knowing where you are financially.  This is sometimes painful.  I know I'm broke and if I keep doing what I'm doing I'm going to get nowhere financially, yet I "stick my head in the sand" and pretend that everything's gonna be okay.  Can you feel me?

Take out a legal pad and draw a line down the middle of the page. On the left side of the page, write down everything you own. Houses, cars, cash in the bank, stocks, etc.  On the right side of the page write down everything you owe. Houses, cars, credit cards, etc. If the right side is bigger than the left side, you aren't doing well financially, and it's time to do something about it.

It's time to pull your head out of the sand and take the first step toward financial freedom.  Don't be like the Ostrich - or at least like we thought the Ostrich is like.

By-the-way, it is illegal in Alabama to drive while blindfolded.  Really?

Todd: That's a great point, and very interesting to know about the ostrich!  I have also heard that lemmings really don't follow each other off cliffs- apparently there was an incident staged by a Disney wildlife photographer some years ago that led to that misconception.  At any rate, good advice, thank you for sharing!

Todd,

Great post. Like you the head in the sand helps make a point. We all do that from time to time to block out reality. Personally, I like putting my toes in the sand!

I understand that the ostrich tries to hide it's head when in danger.

That's enough for me.

I like the myth.

Many times it seems that the nature of human beings tends to be, the more we make, the more we spend.  However, the problem begins when we start to spend more than we make or like you mentioned Todd, when we owe more than we own.  Inevitably, we are a consumer generated economy and it is the wise consumers that has the higher likelihood of achieving that which we all dream of, financial freedom.  Do we dream of that often enough to make it a reality?
