A gang patrolling the streets in the 50's. Bet they could be fierce. Searcy AR girls.

girls in shorts

The more I view this picture of girls from Searcy Arkansas walking down the street sometime in the 50's the more I feel as if they'd be tough cookies to handle.  They walk with determination.  They have every direction covered.  They have on socks and comfortable shoes so they could chase you down in a hurry.  One even has on boots for stomping.  That fourth one with the dress on may have on heels and she's definitely overdressed for this street patrol.

I love the fact that they are trim and not a single one is overweight.

Seeing our young people walk the streets today will find very few who are not overweight.  We also see very few with short shorts today and if they had on short shorts they'd have on spike heeled shoes and toddle along trying to maintain balance while trying for glamour.

Perhaps a reader can identify these gang members and tell us what they were doing and why they were doing it.  Personally, I like them.  And that could be because I once dressed a lot like this.........

Barbara:  Ahhh... nice girls in shorts.  Too cool.  I remember those times, I really do.

Funny... but I just got a new computer with Windows 7, and am looking at a split-screen... with your posts on Internet Explorer on the left side, and Firefox on the right... side by side, just to see what the difference is.

On the Internet Explorer side, the photo of the girls in shorts shows up, but the Rodger Duncan tomatoes picture does not.

On the Firefox side... no picture of the girls in shorts... but yes, Rodger is there.  Funny how it works.  Either that, or already my new computer has been invaded by aliens.

It is a real hoot looking at some of these old photos. I wonder if folks will be looking at pictures of us 50 years from now and saying the same thing...

Helping you, help others live their American dream...

Loved all the above comments, and YOUR take on the picture, Barbara...we were NOT tough girls cruising for a fight, but just 4 "innocent" girls walking down the street in Hot Springs, Ark. at the time of the Arkansas State Band Festival, held yearly in Hot Springs.  The girl on the left with boots, was a majorette, hence the boots and this was a sort of "prestigious" thing to have, to let others know you were a majorette. I'm next, then Mildred:  Im pretty sure we are wearing our white band shirts.  Marian is next...we'll have to ask her to comment on why the skirt instead of shorts.....Marian is now a top notch realtor in North Carolina,  still selling even though she's well over the age of retirement.  In Hot Springs in those great days:  (the 50's)...professional photographers were all over the place snapping your picture, then begging you to buy them.  Guess we did!  Couldn't have cost much, for we didn't have much money in our pockets in those days, either.

By the way, we WERE all slim for we didn't have all the junk food to eat and we walked everywhere or rode bicycles.....parents only had one car and NO ONE had their own car.

Barbara, LOL, you got your response from one of the ladies!

My mother used to tell me a story about going to New York City, late 40's probably, from Boston. Beantown being the most conservative? Nope... not compared to NYC then. My mom and her friend left the hotel with their pedal pushers on, and got escorted right back by a NYC policeman. All for wearing pedal pushers! Can you imagine?

Dear Barbara's Godson, Nutsy the Squirrel:   I'm sure you don't know any of them but you do need to know this:  the second girl (me) married a man whose first cousin had a date with Elvis Presley - before he became famous.    And I, Anita Fuller, had a friend who had a friend who was the mother of the girl Elvis was with when he met his untimely demise.

Andrea:  I can just hear my father now... after looking at these girls in the 50's... laughing so hard, and calling them "brazen hussies."  Oh, the shame of it all.  Gotta go to confession, now.   LOL

Barbara:  All we need now... is a recording of "Short Shorts" by the Royal Teens playing in the background.  That would surely complete this picture.  :)  Ahhh... the lure of "simpler times."

Susan, I agree.  The sisterhood is was!

James, they could take on any DC folks anytime!!  LOL

Karen Anne, I wrote a blog once about how things appear on different screens.  Too bad we don't all have the same and too bad I don't have time to check to see how they look on all browsers.  I'm just glad to have you visit my blog!!

Michael, I'll bet they will be.  Plus they can be reading our trivia that we've spread all over the internet!  What fun they'll have.

Anita, thanks for the explanation and your plea of innocence.  You still look pretty tough to me though.  LOL

Andrea, that is a fantastic story!  You need to follow up on that and see if they had an ordinance against showing flesh in New York.  WOW!

Nutsy, I'll bet they did like the guy who looks a lot like you....the great Elvis.

Anita again!  You've got to elaborate about all of these famous friends.  More blogs!  You really do have a lot of famous friends and relatives and friend's relatives.

Karen Anne, that song Short Shorts would be so appropriate.  Without air conditioning back then you were ready to bare all the skin that you could.  I was a brazen hussy to if that's what it implied!  LOL

Barbara:  So YOU were a brazen hussy, too... huh ?  I just KNEW there was something special about you.  In addition, of course, to all those OTHER things about you that make you so special.  How am I doin' with all this "suck up" stuff ?

 Barbara:

I was the overdressed one in the picture!! Where did you get this picture? Anita sent it to me and she didn't say where it came from.  It certainly brought back a lot of old memories when we made band trips.  I haven't seen Judy Deener (girl on the left) in such a long time.  Anita and I visit at class reunions and she makes sure I'm kept up to date with things in White County.  I'm still a "tough" gal! Have to be in the real estate market!

Always enjoy your blogs and the ability to keep up with Searcy happenings.

I certainly welcome your referrals for Charlotte, NC or South Carolina!  It's really beautiful this time of the year!

Take Care.

Kfaren Anne, you're worse at sucking up than Nutsy.  All he wanted was for me to put him in my will and he'd share his Nigerian fortune with me.  What do you expect?

Patricia, they have neat skinny straight legs, don't they?

Barbara - Wouldn't it be neat to climb into a Time Machine and travel back to that time for just a little while!  I really think those that grew up in that time were so fortunate.  The 50s were an idylic time.  The 60s is when the nation began to lose its innocence.  The 70s were all polyester, and wallpaper with large orange, avocado and yellow flowers on a white background.

I had to laugh though when someone from my office wanted to have a "Retro" party.  We were going back to the 80s!  Heck, I was old even in the 1980s:-)

Yeah, but some of them are wearing glasses. It's kinda hard to be tough when a fist to the face could break your glasses.

Myrl, these girls did live an idylic life.  They were free to roam the streets of Searcy without fear of being kidnapped or done harm.  The 70's in Searcy Arkansas was definitely avocado green and harvest gold!  Some houses built then still have green bathtubs!

Elizabeth, you over analyze, my dear!  Glasses can be slung aside!  LOL
