Leave it to my Mother to come up with innovative solutions. My parents spend their summers in Central Michigan, not far from where they grew up, or for that matter not far from where I went to grade school. North of Rosebush, and South of Clare on Stevenson Lake. They spend their winters at their home in Holiday, FL less than two blocks form where my Grand Parents retired fifty years ago.

To say my parents are traditional, will get you no arguments, but it does make my mother's idea stand out. It's time to sell their lake home. The 5 lots with 400 feet of water frontage in a park like setting are just a little to much as they get older and the 5 of us kids are no longer around, the Grand Kids are getting to old, to get excited about going to Grand Ma's to ride Grand Pa's lawn tractor on weekends, and the Great Grand Kids are still to young to be outside when the lawn is being mowed. No longer does cleaning the large poll barn for Grand Pa fascinate them, once the patio and fishing boats are launched. Sweeping out the detached garage is ok, 3 to 5 minutes at the most then ask Grand Pa for the boat keys. Asking only $144,900.00 it's time to move on not to a smaller house This one's just right with 2 bedrooms but to one where the only outside work will be their personal garden.

It's that garden that got my attention, with the lake house for sale, Mother didn't want to lose this years crop. So instead of planting as they have always done, Mother had a new plan. She had seen an idea for senior gardeners with ageing backs, to plant their garden not in the ground, but on and in bales of straw! Not only would this save bending, but when the house sells they can have their garden loaded on a trailer and moved to their new home. As I get the story the first croup of tomatoes came up great until the morning when Mother looked out and saw the deer eating all her plants and part of the garden. The second crop fenced from the deer is said to be going well.

I'm familiar with apartment and condo dwellers planting in buckets, but this is the first time I've heard of planting in straw. Leave it to my Mother. Bill - Just got my e-mail back after 4 weeks.  Don't know what happened.  Turned it on today and it was just there.   Love the blog about your  mother.  You have a wonderful way with words and who knows - stranger things have happened - maybe someone will be interested enough to investigate the place.  I would if I was a stranger and just read your story.   Glad to hear you had a good time on your trip.  Hope the change did you both good.   All is well here.  Mike has caught us up with all the little "hard" things we can't do anymore and its good to have everything done.   Better delete some more unwanted forwards and then get your dad something to eat - stuffed peppers tonight.  Not from my straw garden, although we have had two tomatoes from it in spite of the deer.   Love to you both.  Mother

Mary,

I've never met any Archambault's in Michigan that weren't related. I don't know who would be in that part of the state. They are probably decedents of my Great Grandfather Robert Saxon Archambault. Great Grandpa was from Clare, like my Grandfather. Two of my Grandfathers older brothers, Mike and Bob lived in the Detroit area his younger brother, John was from Cadillac. My direct family is from Clare.

The family keeps growing and we'd have to compare Grandparents to know who's who.

It was nice of you to write.

Great post - I moved from Saginaw and the chaos it is becoming to further north and in an environment that was is for the most part very peaceful, with lakes in nearly every direction - providing a great opportunity to spend time with the kids fishing, boating, and the like. Although I've never been much of a winter guy - it's the price I'm willing to pay for the beautiful summers here.  Your being familiar with the area - I'm actually north of Mt Pleasant - nearer to Clare, but south of the small town of Farwell - in a quiet community just north of Littlefield Lake. The place is reminiscent of the small town rural feel of the community I grew up in St.Charles. Thanks for taking the time to share; it's a very well written and enjoyable post to read.

TJ,

There is nothing wrong with Saginaw that a short drive in any direction won't cure.

I was in Farwell 10-07-07 we spread my brother's ashes along the Tobacco River behind my Uncle's place just out side of town. A lot of great meriones there and one sad one.

We drove around Littlefield Lake 10-9 stopped to visit my cousins Gorge and Beth Brown, Beth is with the credit union George use to cut hair in Clare.

That's a great place to raise kids!

I got your message about IM'ing but alas I don IM. I'm pretty good at e-mail.
