I was called out today by one of my readers. Usually when I get a comment on my blog and it is ideologically in direct contravention to my beliefs, Chris Heidelberg my business partner and producer will address the reader. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. However the person who made the comment about the Oklahoma Militia is a registered Republican, a direct descendant of a Confederate Cavalry Officer and one of my closest friends. Unlike many Republicans, my friend always takes the time to articulate why he is on the right of certain issues. Grudgingly, I have to admit that there are times I agree with his reasoning. He once told me that he discussed political issues with an associate of his and 98 percent of the time they agreed with each other. It was only when his friend disclosed that he was Democrat that the two started disagreeing with each other on everything from the color of McDonald's sign to the merits of George W. Bush. However, I digress.
My friend, who happens to be from Oklahoma, sees an argument in favor of having a militia. He posed the question to me. How many lawmakers out there do what the people who elected them want ? Then he asks me what would happen if the Federal Government were afraid of the militias? His answer was that the government would take more care in representing the people. Maybe this is a valid point, maybe it is not. Sorry to be so darn wishy washy.
In my humble opinion, the answer to that question is even more simple than that. We are experiencing hard times. I wasn't born in the Great Depression, but I would venture to say that this period in history is approaching those times. I do not know if we are technically in a Depression, but guess what. I know an awful lot of people that don't have jobs. They aren't just random people. They are my friends. I first want to say this and you can agree with me or not agree with me. I sincerely believe we are in the situation we are in because of George W. Bush and his cronies. Now you can argue with me if you want and that is fine, but before you do. Answer a question for me. I'm not talking about your philosophical answer. I'm asking a question. The question is directed to all of you out there who don't have jobs. The question is directed to all of you out there who have seen their retirement package shrink by seventy percent. The question is directed to all those whose house has gone down in value by fifty percent. The question is directed toward those who are white and who are black. If you had to do it all over again and turn back the clock, would you honestly vote for George W. Bush again? You can tell me to my face that you would vote for George W. Bush again, but I know you wouldn't.
My view of the militias is that they were useful during the initial hostilities between England and the American colonies. They were restored to use during the Civil War. Maybe it's this part of the history of the militia that, well for lack of a better word, makes me a little reticent to give my ringing endorsement. Now we have new President. He is trying to get things done. A lot of people don't trust him, but I do. My personal feelings about the President may be irrelevant. He is using the full power of the Federal Government to try to fix all of the problems from the last administration. Yes, he does believe the ends justify the means. I 'm just saying that if what happened between years 2000 to 2008 hadn't happened. I submit that we would not be talking about big government, socialism or, God help us, militias. We don't need a bunch of angry gun toting men who are pissed off by their "less than optimal" lot in life. Don't blame Obama. He didn't drive the bus that dropped us off at Depression St. Yes, it was that joker George W. Bush.
A state by state militia will not force lawmakers to make the right decision. The only thing that will change how lawmakers act is a serious overhaul of how we do business on Capitol Hill. Militias are breeding grounds for disenfranchised and dissatisfied individuals who feel like they have been exploited by the system. Arming a militia is how revolutions get started and we don't want that.
