Bob Stewart's post telling us the end is near (the end of the proxy errors that is) reminded me of Cheryl Teague's post from ActiveRain's 2nd or 3rd month of existence. Bob wrote "server update" yesterday.

ActiveRain is gonna blow - 2006

If you are a member read the comments in this precious page out of ActiveRain's history. Cheryl Teague who is not currently active wrote it because of early sever error messages. According to a Florida member there were less than 800 members in Florida at the time. How many members do you think there are in Florida today?

"There are 19117 Florida Real Estate Profiles"

That's pretty darn active.

ActiveRain - 2010

Wonder how many pageviews per day now... with 179,695 members and a lot of Google juice? Someone in the know said in the comments back in August 2006:

"150k page views yesterday"

The title of Cheryl's post has always bothered me... I am sure you could get some "smart alecs" to agree that "ActiveRain blows." There are times I am angry with ActiveRain, or maybe frustrated is a better word.

Frustrated with

server errors
having a hard time adding photo
the plagiarism some members embrace
robotic point pig comments
"inappropriate" content on Localism

and more...

Cheryl was talking about some early isolated issues that may or may not have had to do with hardware, traffic, the growth of ActiveRain back in 2006. It is amazing how loyal some members are to ActiveRain and how others have grown disenchanted with ActiveRain over time.

I just wanted to share the 2006 view of growth on ActiveRain with you.

We did not have a clue about the future.

I actually thought there were less proxy errors so I thought it was underway. Perhaps some people are staying away.

I don't agree. They have to stay ahead of it. As they add members they are going to have to add capacity just like any other business.

I don't really remember there being widespread problems in 2006, that's why Cheryl's post stands out for me. I don't believe there were server errors in 2007 but there was a lot of growth that year, so it was fixed then. There was a period in 2008 when there were lots of proxy errors but they got it taken care of. They are working to get it under control now.

They will have to plan to keep up with the growth IMHO. Or keep "fixing" it as they grow.

Hi Maureen... Growing pains are inevitable in any venture and sometimes the rate of growth catches people off guard. I think that the server errors are very annoying, but no more so than the whining posts (not this one) complaining about a situation we are all frustrated with and which Bob has already posted that they are working on. ActiveRain has delivered us all a great deal of benefit and as frustrated as I am with the errors, I can't help but think that my patience and understanding are a small price to offer on my part in paying Jon, Bob and the rest of the staff back.

There would have been way less whiney posts if they'd acknowledged the problems a lot earlier. They need a fail whale.
