Volcanic Erruption in Iceland affects Real Estate Showings in Florida

Yesterday, there was a volcanic erruption in Iceland.

  • The distance between Iceland and Florida is 5,764 kilometers or 3,581.59 miles.

VolcanoWhen I first learned about the volcanic erruption in Iceland this morning and read about flight cancellations in various countries, I was quite amazed.  At first I didn't think much of the effect that this volcanic erruption would have on me.

But then I began to think about the next few days.

I had expected new customers from Great Britain to arrive in Florida this weekend and we were going to view several homes for sale in the Spring Hill Florida area.

  • The distance between Iceland and Great Britain is 1,809 kilometers or 1,124.06 miles.

It soon became clear to me that a local erruption can become a global disruption.

Certified International Property Specialist Silvia DukesWorking with international customers has always been my special passion.  Not only is it the exposure to different customs, cultures, and view points, it also requires an awareness of what is happening globally that could have an effect on my business.

Most commonly, things like currency exchange rates, cultural differences in buying, decision-making, and negotiation behaviors, and even aesthetic considerations based on different beliefs and customs would come to mind when thinking about conducting business with international buyers

Having had the opportunity to work with many international home buyers, I know real estate is local and global

International RealtorA lot of preparation has gone into these particular showings.  Emails had been going back and forth, homes had been previewed, additional photos had been taken, information about the area, accommodations, climate, shopping and entertainment opportunities, and much more had been shared.

The day was coming closer when all of this work was to culminate in a personal meeting.  But then there was the volcanic erruption in Iceland.

My customers will not be able to keep their schedule as originally planned but they will arrive a few days later.  Meanwhile, I will reschedule appointments already made.

At least I can say that the volcanic erruption in Iceland is probably the most unique reason for not being able to make a showing appointment!

Silvia.. I will bet you that this coming winter will be one where the Northeast WILL get more snow because of this eruption.

When Mount St. Helen erupted, this is what occurred the following year.  This will be GREAT news for all skiers.

Oh Silvia we heard the volcanicand flight cancellations news this morning also.  Who would have thought of the repercussions? You are absolutely right, it is an original reason for cancelling appointments.  Good luck with your clients when they finally arrive.

Silvia - The Iceland volcano has been disrupting a lot of activities, especially travel.  I read an article today or yesterday about other volcano disruptions that created more significant disruptions that lasted for up to a couple of years including famine, weather changes, lack of sunlight in the summer and more.  I expect that many electronics in Europe will be negatively affected by the volcano dust.

Good luck on your showings whenever they occur.

Valerie, it sounds like you were "snow deprived" last winter!

Al and Peggy, it just shows how small the world has become and also how much we take it for granted to be anywhere at anytime and on schedule!

Marc, it's amazing how our so highly technical and sophisticated lives are so easily thrown off by a natural event.

Hi Silvia,

Entire European air traffic has been affected by this volcanic eruption,a lot of international airports closed for a few days.I think personally it's more a terrorism to be blamed than this one volcano in Iceland, after the tragedy in Smolensk all European airports are on the alert.

Greetings from Poland !

Debi, and the effects are going to last for a while.

Eva, my condolences to you and the people of Poland.  Obviously, I've been following the reporting about the volcano on several international news sources.  I do believe that the two events are unrelated.
