Cross walk for the Florida Panther...Only in South Florida!

By
Home Inspector with Cape Coral Florida

This is a very common road sign in SW Florida, the Florida Panther crossing yield sign. I get a kick out of these whenever I see one. Although the sign is fairly common, I've never actually spotted the Florida Panther in the wild.

Here are some interesting facts. The Florida Panther is 23-27 inches at the shoulder for males and females are smaller, and 7 feet long nose to tip of the tail for males; 6 feet for females and weigh 130lbs for men and 70-75 lbs for female. They're not a small animal! While they used to be found in other states, they're now only found in Florida, south of the Caloosahatchee River. There are estimates that fewer than 100 exist.

They're are conservation efforts to help this endangered animal. One of the most active can be found here: http://www.defenders.org/wildlife_and_habitat/wildlife/panther.php

Panther Crossing!  Are you pulling our leg Jay?  I've seen a lot of Crossing signs, but I'm trying to remember if I have ever seen a predator sign.

That is just cool.  There is no doubt I would give it the right of way...and the wrong of way if need be.

This is great!  We don't have professional football team here, no major league baseball teams either (we have to go to Seattle to see any good games).  We do have a minor league baseball team -- the Beavers.  Yeah, I can just see that sign post . . .

Vic: This is true, I'm not pulling your leg. We actually have panther crossing signs all over South Florida. I do like the signs.

Carla: We do actually have a NHL team named the Florida Panthers, but the blog is true. We actually have Florida Panthers and there's not too many left.

Doug: I'd give the right of way in a second too, but I've never seen one. I hope if I ever do, I have my camera ready...you know how we inspectors always have our camera ready.
