Life! by Design - Turning a Negative into a Positive

“I am not leaving my family and moving to Australia”!  With that, my mother threw tickets to Australia into the fire.  This, apparently, is how the story went.  My mother and father both hail from London, England.  Dad worked at Lloyd’s of London, and was fed up with the rat race of taking the tube every day to work.  He longed to travel to a commonwealth country and start a new life.  My mum, on the other hand, was very close to her 3 sisters in England, and didn’t want to move.

Don’t worry, I’ll get to me, but really, I need to give you some background before I showed up.  Dad tried again, a few months later, with tickets to Canada.  This time, he said they would just try it out for two years, then return to England.  This was in 1959, and they are still here, now retired on Vancouver Island.

How does any of this relate to me, you might ask.  Well, growing up, my parents were a great influence in my life.  My mum would always lament the fact that things were fine here, but that everything was so much better in England.  The countryside was better, the history was better, the chocolate was better (ok, I’ll agree with that one); life in general, it seems, was just all around better in England, and anything in Canada just didn’t quite come close.

I truly believe that because of my mum’s words, although I liked where I lived, I always felt there was some place out in the world that was just better.  My favourite subject in High School was French.  To me, that was my ticket, my passport to see the world.  I couldn’t wait to go to University back east in Quebec City, to improve my French language even more.  After that, I moved to France and lived in Grenoble for a year, continuing to learn French.  I became a flight attendant, based in Halifax and then Toronto, and travelled the world.  I did discover that there are some amazing places in the world.  Yes, some places had far superior history or culture or arts or restaurants than Vancouver.  However, none of these places had my parents, my brother and sister, and now my children.  Home is where the family is.  Family is what makes a place the best place on earth.

I really enjoyed reading a preview of Tom Ferry’s latest book, Life! By Design.  Exploring who was my most positive influence in my life growing up, led me to my mother’s negativity about where we lived.   Interesting that out of this negativity, all sorts of positive actions and thoughts emerged.  I was so disappointed when I finished the chapter of this book.  The excerpt ends with “How are you feeling? Ready for more?  Turn the page.”  I desperately want to turn the page, and I will, as soon as I purchase my very own copy of Life! By Design.

This post is to help promote Tom Ferry's upcoming book, LIFE! By DESIGN. The contents of my post are the result of some self reflection the preview chapter of the book asks us to do about ourselves.

Randy - this was a great exercise.  It's amazing how this one little article is really only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the chapter was asking us to contemplate.

Roger - darn - I should have used that quote as the title of this bog!

Mary Lou - another gold star!  Thank you so much.

Janice - Isn't it interesting how fate played around with people's lives?  Your husband and I could be speaking with an Aussie accents right now!

Cathy - Thanks so much.  That's great that you've bought the book - now I'm just waiting for your "Life! by Design" post...

Hi Sally ~ I loved reading your story and found some interesting parallels in my own life.  I too "went East" to Quebec for my first year of college (Montreal) and soaked up all that wonderful French Canadian culture.  I later worked for a major airline and travelled extensively in Europe, eventually moving to Ireland for 8 years.  I always felt that home is where the heart is, and as much as I seem to have been born with a wanderlust gene, love being home with my family.  I will have to order a copy of the book!

Maureen, it's amazing how similar our stories are!  Isn't it interesting how working for the airlines helps us in our staging careers.  I find that the "people skills" I perfected while working for the airlines has definitely helped me in dealing with often stressed out home sellers and agents.  Soaking up all that art and culture while abroad really opened my eyes up to design.  Where did you live in Ireland?  Would love to hear more.  I've only been to Kinsale.  One day, over a glass of wine (or Guiness!)...

Michelle - this was great fun.  Some of the questions in the book really make you think and search deeply.

Roger - would love to hear more...

Kathy - I also wonder if because I was able to "sew my oats" early, now I'm content to stay in one place.  My daughter is studying in McGill in Montreal right now, and has just informed me she's not coming home for the summer.  Oh dear, I hope history isn't about to repeat itself!

Fred - As your wife will tell you, you have to flip the Cadbury's bar to the back and check for the Royal seal from the Queen to ensure that the bar was fabricated in England.  The Cadbury made in Canada just doesn't cut it!  I believe there are some excellent British sweet shops in Victoria!  I know, I have a stack of Brian Tracy books and cd's waiting to be read, but I'm ever hopeful that one day I'll get there.

Thanks, Michelle, I really enjoyed writing this post, but I enjoyed reading everyone else's post even more.  There are some amazing stories of self-discovery.  Yes, the book should be great.
