I don't remember the date, exactly, but I was standing outside Barnes and Noble, on the phone with my friend Mike. We both had been talking about writing a book, but really, I was talking about it, he was doing it.
"Just get off your #@@ and do it," he said, "I'm gonna keep asking you about it." (Wish you could hear his Jersey accent in my writing.)
This was about the time that I made the decision to get back into the financial services industry, and I knew that I would have to put my book writing dreams on the shelf in order to focus on my practice - at least for the next five years. Mike didn't agree with me. He said that if you are passionate about something, you just have to do it.
Fast forward two years. I'm in Barnes and Noble - in my favorite section -, the business section, and lo and behold, there's Mike's book, front and center. I already had a copy, but to actually see his book on display in one of the big chains was exciting.
Mike was passionate about his pursuit. But, he was also persistent. That made the difference.
In SimpleEconomicsTM principle #3, "Where do you want to go?," I recommend writing down on paper what you're passionate about, and then either "poop or get off the pot." (I would probably use another term if we were face to face.)
The purpose of principle #3 is to get you to write down your passions and dreams, and then figure out what you are going to do about it NOW so that twenty years from now you won't be singing the song of regret.
Do you just like sitting on the toilet, or are you going to do something about it?
My good friend, Mike Michalowicz, is the author of "The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur," (http://www.toiletpaperentreprneneur.com) I highly recommend his book.
