Photo Re-sizing is Easy Right Here in AR - No Software Needed

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty

Thanks to AR member George Tallabaswho inspired me to post this blog when he wrote about photo resizingin his blog Photo Sizing Made Easy - Thanks To My Active Rain Search! .

You don't need any of software to resize your photoshere in active rain it can all be done right within your blog post and here's how.

Let's say I wanted to resize this photo that I took today at the very end of the Mt Baker Highway.  The road has only been open two days since the snow was cleared and you can see there's still plenty of it.  There is usually easy hiking trails here to spectacular views of Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan when there isn't so much snow.

To resize your photo you start just as you would like inserting any photo in your blog by clicking on the little tree icon above where you type your text.  This will bring up an insert/edit image window

On the first line that says Image URL you either insert a web address where your images stored, or click on the little box at the right side of this line and you can insert an image directly from your hard drive.  If you click on the box another window will open that will ask you to upload an image to active rain.

Pretty self-explanatory, browse your hard drive to find the image and upload it.  It will end up in the preview box of the insert/edit image window.

Now to change the size of the image click on the Appearance tab.  This will bring up a whole set of options.

The one where concerned about here to change the size of your image as a second line, the dimensions.  Let's say I want to change the size of my image to 300 pixels wide, I was simply enter 300 in the left most box on the dimension line in place of whatever is there.  If you leave the constrain proportions box checked all you have to do is click anywhere else in that window and the other and dimension will automatically change to keep the proportion of the picture the same.

You can also put a border around you picture, or some horizontal and vertical space if you have text right around it.  And you can do that as I did in the first picture in this series by choosing left from the drop-down menu in the alignment box or right for this one.

You might have to experiment with the size of the image but once you get a size you like, ..... you get the idea and you can use that size anytime you like or any other.  Play around with it a little bit and you get the hang of it quickly.

 Enjoy

Good information Michael.  If I have used reduced size pictures (using Irfan View) in localism, when you click on them they do not get bigger.  Making thumbnails right on AR makes good sense.  Thanks for the lesson.

Thank you for the post. I had to learn this by trial and error and it took a while. I did not know about the URL feature though. That way if my photo is in flicker or photo bucket I can just grab it from there now? Katerina

Keep one thing in mind though. (I'm assuming this works like most other sites.)  The actual size (resolution and download time) does not CHANGE, just the size of what is viewed.  If you upload a photo that is 2400 pixels wide, 1800 pixels high and 300 dpi (and 1.5MB in size) and you resize it to 400 pixels wide through Active Rain, the 'size' of the file remains at 1.5MB. That means that the download time for that photo will be very, very long.

It's a common mistake many people make when uploading photos to their website.  They resize the physical, viewable size, but the actual size remains the same.  And unworkable on the web.

You should still make sure you resize large photos the proper way before uploading to AR.

This is great to know. I usually make sure that any photo I upload is already resized, but this will help when I get too quick and forget.  Thanks for the post.
