If you spend much time with me, you will hear me talk about “choices”. Do you choose to surround yourself with people who have high standards and a good value system?

Do you choose to work for a company that treats it’s clients with respect and is ethical in every way? Or, do you choose to associate with friends and colleagues who have questionable ethics and excercise bad judgment, but choose to ignore it because of their perceived “status” in the community?

Do you choose to have “negative” people in your life and find yourself wondering why you have a bad attitude? In a recent post by Seth Godin, called Contagious,  Seth reinforces my feeling that you CHOOSE your friends, your employer, and the people in your life which ultimately shapes the way you are.

I choose to have a positive attitude, and associate with people who are ethical and respectful. I have left companies, and relationships, over that issue. That is my choice.

Take a few minutes to think about that today. What do the choices you make in your business, and personal relationships, and your surroundings, reveal about you?

In the book "Book Yourself Solid" the first suggestion of the author is to get rid of about 20% of your client base. He suggests you stop associating with that group that drains all of your time, emotion, money, etc.

I agree with you whole-heartedly! Great job. Keep up the positive attitude!!

Thanks.

Jackie,

I couldn't agree with you more. If you surround yourself with just one negative person it can spread like poison! I too have left a company in the past that was not on the "up and up." It can be damaging to everything that we work hard for.

Jackie-Thank you for such a great post.  I'm drawn to people who are very positive and I want to send that message out for myself as well. It is so uplifting and energizing to be around that type of environment.  It gives us that much more motivation.

Jackie,  we try so hard to build relationships and a reputation that is positive, why not set high standards before we even begin the process!  An image that takes a lifetime to build can be destroyed in a moment...it would be a shame for all of our hard work to suffer because we do not associate with like minded professionals.

Steve:

I agree, but sometimes people are not always what they appear to be...you have to THEN be willing to eliminate them from your life!

It is a very well known that world around you, the personal environment, has a major effect on your personality and what you project to the outside. Sometimes in our early and innocent times of our life, we had to learn in a hard way that lesson.

When I got my first job in real estate, as an agent, I found myself in a large office. I was intimidated and very humble as I knew how much I have to learn from others... Specially from my Company's Broker. After 1 year I had to live that Company as I was confronted with many questionable practices. I refused to compromise... I left and lost few thousand dollars on commisions to the gain of a gready Broker.

This is so true.  We have a fairly large office and many of the agents are complaining about the lack business.  It is so easy to get wrapped up in the negativity, which can bring you down.  I feel that the best way to get out of this is to surround yourself with the positive people who are working towards getting business.  The positive attitudes are contagious and it sure makes for a better day.  Wouldn't it be great if there was an outlet to brag about our business and have people share our happiness.  Thanks for your post!

We have 228 agents in our office and I try so hard to avoid being sucked into DOggie Downer conversations about how bad things are. So much of who we are comes from self talk and internal programming that letting those people into your life. When one of these Doggie Downers start up I say Yeah and the price of gas is really high but I found a station on xyz street that is the cheapest in town, things are looking up, and move to either a positive topic or find a reason to need to step away.

Great Post Jackie,

We are judged by the company we keep.  We have to be aware of that.
