Early Bordello Chic

My friend Jared's, 83-year old, aunt Celia died a few months back.  Yesterday morning he gave me a call.

Jared invited me to a late breakfast over in Woodland, a town about 20 miles west, and a tad north of Sacramento.  He wanted me to walk-thru Aunt Celia's house with him, and to provide a little advice.  Aunt Celia had never married or had children.  Jared had been her favorite nephew, and the house is bequeathed to him.

The instant I had crossed the front door threshold, I became fairly certain, Aunt Celia had been a dance hall girl in a previous 1850s lifetime.

Her home for the last 45 years, and especially her bedroom, were decorated in what I would describe as "Early Bordello Chic."  Aunt Celia had been a VERY colorful character!

Picture furnishings from the Victorian era, with red-flocked wallpaper, velvet drapes, and period light fixtures.  The home itself was likely built around 1910, and although it was approximately 1000 square feet or so, it had a remarkably open and functional floor plan.

Jared doesn't have the heart to sell the home in the near future.  He's still very nostalgic about the house, and still grieving the loss of his aunt.  He works in El Dorado Hills, so moving to Woodland, isn't really an option either.  For now, he has decided he will rent it out.

He asked my opinion about whether to modernize, or keep the integrity of the 1910 construction period.

As I continued to move from room to room, I gazed at the wonderful old wood cabinetry in the dining area, the wood floors, and quality finish craftsmanship we don't see in newer homes today.

As we neared the end of the walk-thru, I had pretty much came to the conclusion, it would be best to clean the place up, make minor repairs to the kitchen cabinets, and a few other cosmetic things.

But I caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye, which made me realize Aunt Celia, and I, had to of been kindred spirits!  There on the fireplace mantle, was a jar - identical to one on my own office shelf.  The caption on the jar, "Ashes of Dead Lovers."

The serendipitous discovery made words leap out of my mouth, as if powered by spontaneous combustion, "Don't change a thing in this house," I said - "It's perfect as it is!"

Myrl, I enjoyed your story of Aunt Celia. She sounds like she was a wonderfully eccentric woman full of character.  I would have absolutely loved to see her home that sounds as if it represented her life beautifully. It's funny that when you saw the jar, Ashes of Dead Lovers that was your connection to Celia and the home, and you knew that things should stay as they were. You have to go with your gut. It won't steer you wrong!

Sandy - My fear when I realized the house should stay as it was, is that I feared Aunt Celia would haunt the dickens out of us if we changed a thing:-)

Hi Myrl, I remember you talking about your jar of ashes of dead lovers, that jar makes me laugh.  Aunt Celia's home sounds very interesting indeed, I'm still not sold on the red flocked wallpaper though :-) I love this story, having just gone through my Aunt's house and seeing old photograph's etc., it hard to change what they have left behind.

LOL! What a great post, Myrl! I'm with Mary on the red flocked wallpaper tho... might be tough to get that past a potential renter...

Hi Myrl, I read this story and smiled.  I L'dOL at your comment to Sandy while agreeing with Mary. The wallapaper may be a dificult obstacle for any tenant, especially when they ask Jared if he would mind if they remove it, :-)

Mary - At first glance I had a few concerns about the red flocked paper too.  It's on one wall that shares the fireplace!  But somehow it pulled everything together in that room. . .LOL  However, perhaps it could be removed, and that wall and the room painted in some "tastefull" albeit not as colorful shade:-)

Debi - You would have to of experienced it, to have believed it. . .LOL

William - When I got back in my car I found myself on the highway, laughing like a banchee!  When Realtors get up in the morning, we NEVER know what we will encounter as the day unfolds!  It's unbelievable!  One thing for certain however, Aunt Celia's presence is still very much "ALIVE" and well in that house.  I woudn't want to be the one to remove HER red flocked paper. . .LOL

Myrl, where are the photos. What a facinating story. I'm dying to see what the house looked like and I agree...don't change a thing unless he feels she's still there. I suppose as long as he liked her a lot that could be acceptable. Great story....just loved the read!

Hi Jeanean - Monday was one of those days that every shutterbug hates.  Although, I hadn't planned on taking pictures that day, I always have a camera I carry in my purse, even though I don't constantly haul my larger Nikon SLR around.

When I reached in and brought out my pocket camera, I was distressed to discover the battery was dead, and the spare battery was at home in the charger.  Alas, these things sometimes happen.  However, the graphic is VERY accurate in its appearance of the actual jar!
