Norm's - An Old Fashioned Coffee Shop and Orange County Favorite

By
Real Estate Agent with Village Real Estate Services, Inc.

One of the great old American institutions that seem to be getting more scarce is the coffee shop.  When was the last time you went to a coffee shop?  Well, when you need a quick meal with no muss and fuss, they're your best bet.  An Orange County favorite is one called Norm's.  They are a very small California chain of restaurants (there are only 3 in Orange County) that offer lots of food at reasonable prices.  Recently on my way home from picking up my entry in the Orange County Fair, I decided to take myself out to breakfast at Norm's.

I ordered one of my favorites there - New York Steak (bone-in) and eggs.  The steaks are not prime, but are prepared to order and have lots of flavor.  The eggs are always done just the way I like them.  The meal including cottage cheese in place of their regular hash browns and sourdough toast set me back $6.99 and I had to take half of it home. Pretty good deal, huh?

It's a friendly place.  They're open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day (yes even on holidays).  There's a counter, so if you feel like a bit of conversation, there's always someone interesting to talk with.  Or, if you're with a large group, they have big, roomy booths that can accommodate up to a dozen or more.  The service is always the same...excellent.  The coffee's hot, the portions are plentiful, the servers are friendly, and the restrooms are clean.  They have a kid-friendly menu and it's a great place to bring the family for a meal.  Many of their dinners include soup, cold and crispy salad, entrée, veggies, and dessert.

The four Orange County Norm's Locations are:

  • Costa Mesa - Harbor Boulevard & Wilson
  • Huntington Beach - Beach Blvd.
  • Orange - Katella Avenue just West of Tustin Avenue
  • Santa Ana - Main Street & 17th

Next time you're near one of these locations, stop in and treat yourself to my favorite dessert, a hot fudge(real hot fudge not syrup) brownie ala mode.  Calories?  Yup, but soooo worth it!

Uh Oh!  Now I'm hungry!

Norms is a great place.  I did not realize we only had three of them.  Their sign stands out so much and I have seen it so often it feels like there are more of them!

Hi Ginger - It's a very friendly place. If you sit at the counter, you never know who you'll meet.  Could be just about anyone.  It's really fun.

Patrick - Actually I just thought of a fourth.  I'm going to modify the article.  There's one on Beach Blvd. in Huntington Beach, too.  You're right their signs are so distinctive, it seems like you see them everywhere.

Mike - Norm's isn't fine dining but it certainly is a great way to get a quick meal and a friendly smile.  Now, if you're looking for some fine cuisine, I can certainly poiint you in the right direction.  Thanks for stopping by to read and comment Mike.

Hi Barbara - Not exactly a hop, skip and a jump from Vero Beach.  Maybe you can get out this way one day.

Marlene - I am not a coffee drinking but usually I can get my tea at the coffee shop.  I find the coffee shop cozy, usually good service, the wait staff make a point to get to know each customer.  Norm's looks like a great place and I will stop in if I ever visit your area.
