Need help getting rid of cigarette smoke odor.

Hello all.  I am working on a staging project and I knew before I even entered the home that smokers lived there.

Does anyone have any tried and true methods of removing the odor a home?  I've heard of a product called Room Shocker.  Does it work?

I'm not sure my clients will be able to wipe down all the walls with vinegar and I'm not real hopeful that carpet cleaning will work (most of the home is tile anyways).  I've also heard of leaving out bowls of either ammonia or vinegar.

Help!

The only thing that has been successful for me is painting all the interior space, cleaning the carpets and moping all the floors...... spray down all fabrics, curtains, seat cushions, furniture etc.

Hi Anita,

I have to agree with Randy; clean, clean, clean...everything! Cigarette smoke is so pervasive. Change the air filters, even check the pan under the refrigerator...

What immediately came to mind, though, is what NOT to do: Spraying or dusting with scented anything, without having thoroughly cleaned, just adds another layer--creating a whole new "smell".

Some say if you put out coffee grounds among candles or silks it helps to eat up odors. I had a home recently just like yours. I had them paint the whole house, shampoo carpets, banned them from smoking in the house, etc. The problem is they will still have the smell on their clothes and therefore in closets. I'm just hoping that all their efforts have toned it down ;). we'll see it just went on the market.

Thanks everyone.  My follow-up appointment is next week and I will see (smell) then how well their efforts worked.  I'm keeping my fingers crosse.
