NWMLS "strong password" policy

By
Real Estate Agent with nwRealty.Com

Last week NWMLS announced its new password policy that is a good example of personal security and avoiding/minimizing identity theft.  Here's a brief summary ...

Some Do's:

  • minimum password lenth of 6 characters
  • use a mix of numbers and letters
  • update passwords frequently (every 90 days)
  • use more than one numer
  • keep security software up to date

Some Don'ts:

  • don't use the "rember passwords" option in browsers
  • don't write down passwords
  • don't use the same password for all accounts

OK ... that last one is hard for me.  I already get brain cramps trying to remember the code to get inside my house.

Great tipsLarry. As Agents/Brokers we need a whole book with all our password, but changing them every months or 3 months is a good tip. Mixing numbers and letters helps to. I noticed once that just after I chnaged my passowrd my server worked faster. WE cannot be lazy.We have to change them often and I also don't have google or what not fill in my pass.Great pointers.

Hi Larry, it's an interesting balance between having secure passwords and passwords that are easy enough to remember where you don't have to write them down, especially when you have to change them every three months.  I've talked to some people who try to use completely different passwords for each account and others who try variations on a theme that are easy to remember but not as secure as completely different ones.  Guess there's a balance point for each person.

Cheers,
Steve

We talked about this in our office meeting this morning. I understand the rationale behind the change, it's just going to be a hassle to change your password every 90 days. Ugh!

Just write all of your stronger passwords on a sheet of paper and tape it to the side of your monitor... keeps them handy.

This reminds me of a scene from the movie, "Clear and Present Danger"  Jack Ryan was hijacking into the bad guy's (Ritter) files to get proof of some wrong doing.  Ritter in the meantime was logging into those very same files to delete them.  He had to open his wall safe, pull out his little black book, and find the passwords for the specific files in order to delete them.  Needless to say, that little book was loaded with pages of file names and passwords.

I think I also noticed that the MLS will be requiring the user to change more frequently.  Thanks for sharing this to remind us about our passwords on other accounts.
