Photo of Farmers MarketNothing is better in the summer than fresh, local fruits and vegtables!  There are many options in the Athens, Georgia area for purchasing local produce.  Roadside stands abound in the Madison County, Georgia area and other areas around Athens, Georgia featuring everything from tomatoes to corn to watermelons to squash and some exotic vegtables.

Photo of sign for Comer Georgia farmers marketJust down the road from Athens, GA in the town of Comer, Georgia you'll find a great farmers market. Comer Farmers' Market is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon, and features fresh food, art, antiques, boiled peanuts, artisan breads and more.  Local growers are invited to participate with table rentals only $5 each for more information call (706) 783-4665. They expect to be open every Saturday through October.  Located at 1926 Madison Street, Comer, GA 30628:  From Athens, take Highway 29, North to a right Highway 72 East, which goes straignt into Comer, then watch for the signs.

Oconee County Farmers MarketChoices in Oconee County, Georgia include the Farmers Market in downtown Watkinsville, Georgia located at 26 North Main St, Watkinsville, GA 30677 in front of the Eagle Tavern Museum.  Open: Saturday mornings from May 13 until October. The vendors offer fresh certified naturally grown and locally grown produce and flowers, free range eggs, herbal body and home keeping products, wool, and much more according to organizers.

In Athens, Georgia you can visit the patio at Big City Bread on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm for the Athens Green Market.   Big City Bread's patio is also dog friendly (please obey leash laws) and features great dining choices for breakfast lunch and desserts...yum!

Other options include a weekly ordering system through Locally Grown, according to organizers Dan & Kristen Miller, "Unlike other co-ops, buying clubs, or CSAs where everyone gets the same box of stuff (and you don't know what you're getting until you get it), with Locally Grown you get to order what you want, in the quantities that you want, from the farms that you want."  you place an order via the website at Athens GA Locally Grown betwen Sunday night and Tuesday and then pick your order up once a week on Thursday from Goford Wine at Alps Shopping Center in Athens, GA.  What a cool program!

Michelle I absolutely love famers market.  I think I got it from my grandmother that calls it "the garden."  I have no idea why but when she calls and wants to go to the garden you know the farmers market is up and running for business.  There is nothing like the fruit and vegetables you get from there.
