Government To Take Away Another Freedom

I read this in the Joplin Globe today. Just the one among many things that big brother will be forcing down our throats because we're all too stupid to take care of ourselves.

Have you heard this one? Big Brother is at it again.

The FDA is going to make it illegal for foods to have more than a certain amount of salt - for our own good. They haven't determined the amount yet, but they are intent on doing so.

Two questions? (1) Why is this not a Congressional responsibilty? and (2) why does it need to be done at all?

There already are raw fruits and vegtables that many people eat - with no sodium in them. There already are low sodium soups, crackers, and juices. Avoiding processed foods would eliminate a large portion of the sodium intake.

The FDA says it's going to have to retrain the American palate to enjoy the taste of less salt. Phooey! I like my salt.

I say it's foolish and a huge expense for nothing - not to mention another strike at our freedoms - but go ahead and reduce the salt. Just be prepared to add salt to everything you eat. Salt is there for a reason. It is an essential spice.

Hi Walter...I suppose the government should not impose speed limits on roads, hey why even have driver's licenses, tobacco products should not be limited in the amount of nicotine in them or any other ingredient for that matter, medications should not be monitored.  We're big people if we want to take a medication no one, especially the government, should restrict how much we take.  There are so many things that should be hand-off.  I'm sure you can add and add and add to this list.  "Freedom" above all else.  We should all be able to chose the way we die unless it means getting medical assistance when we are terminally ill.

Interesting thought.  You do make a valid point.  I kinda like my salt too.

Kate,

It's easy to miss the point on something like this. The point is not that they are concerned for our safety. Salt is a necessary spice. It is not medication. The point is simply that this is governmet meddling and control over yet another aspect of our lives. :)
