How To Embed Your Youtube Video into Google Maps

We had over 700 people register for the Youtube Video and Blogging Classes we held over at ActiveRain University this last month. In these sessions, we covered how to create and use video more effectively for your Blogs and websites. We shared some cool tips and important tools regarding the use of video and how to get the most out of Youtube's new look and their added features.

The one thing we didn't have time to teach was "How To Embed Your Youtube Video into Google Maps", then How to embed the "Interactive Map" with your video into a Blog post or website.

SO HERE'S THE DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MANY OF YOU WHO ASKED:

You'll need a Youtube account, if you don't have one, set one up, it's FREE.  You'll also need a Google Account to sign in and save your maps. If you don't have one, set one up, it's FREE too.

Step 1: Upload your video to Youtube.com

Step 2: Select the video you want to embed into Google Maps

Step 3: Copy the embed HTML code from the Youtube Video
(it should look something like this)

Step 4: Go to maps.google.com and click the "My Maps" Link

Step 5: Click on the "Create New Map" link

Step 6: Search the map to find the exact location where you want your video to appear
(zoom in close to find exact location)

Step 7: In the "Edit" mode, click on the placemark icon and place it on the map

Step 8: Click on the "edit HTML" link and add youtube embed code into description box.

Step 9: Give your marker and description box a "Title" and click "ok" and then "Done"

Step 10: Your video will now appear on Google Maps and can also be viewed on Google Earth

Now, to embed the saved Video and saved Map into your Blog or website, click on the "Link" located in the upper right corner and copy the embed code from Google Maps.  Next, place the embed code in your Blog post (using the HTML tab) or on your website and save.  This will put the interactive map including the video into your post or on your web-page.  Visitors can now watch the video from within your interactive map, and never even leave your post or site.

The best part is that even if you don't embed the iframe map into your Blog or website, the video is still attached to Google Maps and can be viewed by anyone who clicks on the video from within the Google Maps page.  Here's what the completed project will look like in a Blog Post.  Try doing this with your community videos, your virtual tours, your travel videos, any video you've created that you want to show up on Google Maps.

Be sure to turn down your volume if you hit play, this video is pretty loud.

I Love sharing this stuff...if it helps one, hopefully it can help many..   :-)

I know this seems like a long post, and looks like it may be tough to do, but it really isn't.  You can have your videos on Google Maps in less that 15 minutes once you do this a few times.

Adding captions/subtitles and annotations to your videos really helps too. The caption text will play a big role in the conversion process from "audio-to-text" making your videos much more likely to be picked up from keyword searches in search engines.

Example: Here's a link to a video my Google Alerts just picked up, it has no captions/subtitles or annotations, and just the fact that the speaker at this event of Microsofts was introduced verbally as Brad Anderson, Google picked it up and alerted me anyway. WOW!!

Looks like the audio-to-text conversion is already taking place on video.

Click below if you want to see the video that GA picked up
(go to the 4:12 time marker for the audio..)

Brad,

I am not sure whether it is because we are getting older and dream slower, but I now start getting the feeling that technical means are even ahead of what i dream. I did not even thought it could be possible.

Now, thinking about it, I am not sure why

Dagny - I use a MAC so to capture any portion of any screen, you press the (Shift+Command+4) keys and select the area you want to copy with your mouse. That's it.  If you want to capture a screen using a PC, just press the (Shift+PrtScn) then you can crop the image using a photo editor or picnik.com.

Brad, thanks for the tutorial.  While in doing this, I came across two of the "Title and description" boxes.  Besides the one you show in your tutorial (where you embed the video), there's also another one that shows up on the left hand side.  I guess we give it a title as well and enter the description of what the placemark map is of?  Also, I chose the smallest video player to embed, but when you click to play the video within the placemark holder, the video doesn't fit within the frame (video is too large and is cut-off).  Any suggestions??  Thanks!

It's ironic that now everyone is jumping on the YouTube band wagon, when I quit YouTube last year. It used to be my playground. I made SO many friends there when it was a community, and sub-culture. I lost interest when Google commercialized the site, and took it all mainstream. They ruined my hobby =(

Terri - in the maps.google link box, there is a customize option link that allows you to resize and customize your map to be embedded.

You also want to save your placemarker in the "My Maps" with the smaller or custom sized video.

You may have to try a few resizes to get it exactly how you want it.

Catherine - if you have Firefox as your browser, you can use scribefire (an add-on) to add colour to your posts.

Kathy - this was not covered in the class, it's something I wanted to share but we didn't have time.

We are hoping to make some of these training classes available in an "Archive Library" in the near future.

Ray - it may just be that it takes a little time to get indexed and start showing on the map. You'll also want to make sure you are using the Video option (link) when searching Google Maps for specific areas.

I have been using video since January and love the responses I get from it.  I originally did new home sales but started getting a bunch of leads that wouldn't buy from the builder I work for.  I have now moved into resale.  Video is a huge part of my marketing.  I don't do a lot of home tours, but more entertaining videos that have a slight real estate message.  I post these in social networking areas and it has paid off tremendously by getting me leads from within my own network.  You can see what I do at http://www.youtube.com/jeremysmith01
