TownPut Some Money Down - and Buy Yourself a Town

A couple of weeks ago, the little town of Wauconda, Washington went up for sale on eBay.  It has no town hall, police station or fire department but it does, however have a zip code and a post office.

The town's owner, Daphne Fletcher, said she never expected it to draw the publicity that it has.  The internet auction of the tiny town has been widely reported on television stations, radio stations and in the newspapers.  It turns out that the impending sale of the town is the biggest news event it has ever had.

Although Fletcher had set the minimum bid at $359,000, earlier in the week it had only attracted a high bid of $155,100.  But, possibly due to all of the news coverage, by Saturday morning 108 bids had come in with the highest one at $370,000.

Two years ago, she put Wauconda put up for sale with a Realtor at a price of $1.1 million, perhaps a bit overpriced, and did not even get a nibble.  Now, Fletcher is trying her hand as a FSBO and handling the transaction by listing it on eBay.

The auction will be open until Friday with a bid of $495,000 as an automatic deal.

The winning bidder will become the owner (and possibly mayor) of their very own hamlet complete with a restaurant and bar, gas station, convenience store and a four-bedroom home.

An entire town for $495,000?  It sounds like a good deal to me!

You know, that would not be a bad idea.  Are you handy?

Claudette:  This is a neat story.  I'll have to follow it and see what the outcome is.  I'm sure the bidding will get up there now.

Chris Ann:

I think this could start a chain reaction of people selling towns.  I wonder...

Claudette...

And since it's your own town, you can lower taxes!

Claudette...."Town Selling"...guess that one must be the actual owner as  is D.Fletcher; but  can't you see a situation where a disgruntled town-folk may decide to put their town up for sale. LOL seriously, it looks like a neat place. Would the owner [purchaser] be the landlord of all those businesses / Homes in the picture? or does someone else collect the $$$$.  Boggles the mind when you think of purchasing  an actual town. Do keep us in the loop here. Fun, fun!

Such great publicity for this little otherwise unknown town.

If you win, do you get to be the mayor too?!!!

Richard:

That would be a great fringe benefit to owning a town - lowering the taxes.  Or, maybe having no taxes.

Barb & Sal:

I guess you would own everything so the rent would be due to you. It would be a lot of upkeep though. You would have to be in charge of keeping the streets clean and snowplowed in the winter.

Craig:

The first thing I would do is appoint myself mayor.

What a fun post Claudette. The town seems so charming. I can't believe it has sat unsold for so long. I'm looking forward to a follow up post so you can tell us how much it sold for.

Just saw the other post, I wonder if you could make yourself Mayor or John Law if you bought it?  haha
