So you are saying...  If I talk to people about real estate daily, I will see success?

Why is it that so many agents fall into the trap of being busy with real estate, but not really being busy doing real estate.  We understand what to do, how to do it, why we should do it, where we should do it, who we should talk to and when we should do it...  But we still "don't" do it...

Is it fear?  Is it that we over-complicate our job?

We fail to realize that our success in real estate is directly proportioned to the size and quality of our database.  Not just a database that is used like a phone book, like most people have. They load all of their contacts into Microsoft Outlook and gloat over how big their database is.  Not realizing that it really is just the phone book.

Think of it this way...  It doesn't matter how many people you know, its how many people think of you when they think of real estate.

So the point is, you need to talk to as many people every day about real estate. If you are only talking, and not asking for the business, then you can consider yourself unemployed that day.  How many days can you last without a positive source of income?

The more you get out there and talk, the more comfortable you will become.  Something first needs to be uncomfortable before it becomes comfortable.  Growth occurs when you push yourself.

I just had this conversation with an agent this morning, so I thought it was a good short topic to share! J

Chris, good point. There is a difference between telling people once in a while what you do and actively promoting your business.

I heard a funny story once about this from Chris Leader. I think he called it Real Estate Radar. He said when people are first getting into the business they tell everyone they are going to be in real estate and they have thier real estate radar on. Once they get thier liscense they shut it off for some reason and keep it to themself like its some gaurded secret.

I admit, I do have issues with bringing it up to strangers in public, but I think  its more so the issue of segueing into a conversation about it with out comming accross as only caring about your profession and not actually caring about them. Once the topic comes up or they ask about it, I have no problems telling them what I do and talking real estate.

@ Larry - Words of wisdom!

@Sonsie - It's great to have interaction that leads to knowledge!

@Terry - So true, so true!  (Fear, hmmmm...  I just thought of my next blog post!)

@Susan - It's great to be here, and always good to see you (in person and online!)

@Marc - So true. If we are not talking about RE, then we may miss opportunities

@Fernando - Yup. :)

@Russell - It's great to be here!

@Claudette - Talking to the right people is so important.  Sometimes you will not know who the right person is, until you ask...

@Heidi - I think when I started, I went almost 4 months... lol

@Missy - So true.

@michael S - We just have to want to tell them...

@Michael P - Keep in doing it!

@loreena - When you get to a point where everyone knows that you are in real estate, you may not have to broadcast it as much, since they are educated on how to pass referrals on to you.  It seems you are at that point!  Great job!

@Christina - Thanks!  (and thanks for the tips on writing good stuff on Active Rain!) See you soon?

@Ted - So true!  Since I told them last year, is that enought?  Nope.  :)

@Ryan - Great point!  The fear goes away with action...  in-action causes the fear to build and build.  Great job!

It's amazing how much business you can get if you actually ask for it.  It's not very easy for people to say no.  I think this is why people you know that should be working with you are sometimes working with someone else.

Build yourself an image, join a sport club, go to the gym, join a book club, advertise etc.

Good luck

That sure seems like a great way to go. Also a good idea to be deliberate and cautious in what you say and what you do (your public image).

somewhat relevant....whenever we make a pitch with my mortgage company--we can talk and talk and talk until we're blue in the face. But the bottom line is you have to ask for the business. What's the worse that happens? They say no?

I do talk about real estate.  I have found that if I don't talk about it, people forget that I do it.  When I first started in the business, I had a situation where a friend in my sunday school class listed with another agent.  When I asked why she didn't call me, she said, "Oh you weren't talking about real estate so I just assumed you got out".  That won't ever happen to me again.  If they don't use me, it's not because they're not sure I'm still in real estate.

@David - Sometimes we don't ask because we are afraid of the "yes"?

@Joshua - Great ideas!

@Melissa- So true...  You don't want to get drunk and run into a client...

@Stephanie - :)

@American Captital Home Loans - So true!  If you don's ask, the answer is always "no"

@Tammie - So true!  out of site, out of mind!

I think I've been doing it sooooo long that the REALTOR logo must be emblazoned on my forehead and only I can't see it...it seems that I can't go anywhere without the conversation ending up being about real estate...guess it has become my VERY comfortable comfort zone:) YAY

Chris,

This is so very true.  You want to be top of mind for the first call they make when they or their friends need real estate sales experience.

All the best, Michelle

Chris, the key thing you mentioned is that it is just a yellow phone book if no attention is made on those contacts.

Great advice - and the comments here were amazing - so many words of wisdom! I will definitely remember Ryan's line next time someone asks me how real estate is.

Chris, very good advice!  Constantly working the business...Rule of thumb a wise agent once told me....Whenever you spend money anywhere.....ask for business.  I have found that to be a helpful reminder.

I think one of the main reasons I am successful is because I am a REALTOR when I wake up, when I work, when I play and when I go to bed.
