It's not often that we Braemar residents in Bristow, VA actually think about the significance of the house numbers on our mailboxes.  Mailbox upkeep is generally the only reason we ever think of them.  You know the friendly reminder to paint, straighten or otherwise fix your mailbox is all that will bring the topic to mind.  Those reminders do keep our Braemar mailboxes looking great and are the beginning to great curb appeal, but I think we need to go a step further.

The house numbers on the side of our mailboxes are the largest and easiet to read for anyone looking to find a home in the neighborhood.  As a Bristow Realtor®, I know just how frustrating it can be if those house numbers on the Braemar mailboxes are not present.  And they are only present on one of our mailboxes.  All too often I find myself driving in a direction where I am looking behind me to see whether or not I have just passed the subject of my search.

I propose that we, as Braemar residents, take it upon ourselves to put our house numbers on both sides of our mailbox.

Sure, a Realtor® like myself would love that for the convenience of my job, but think about the most important implication.  Imagine for a minute an emergency worker with the Nokesville Fire Department trying to find your home.  The mintues are ticking by and each one is precious in such a situation.  The small amount of money and time you spent in putting your house numbers on the blank side of your mailbox could actually save yours, or a family members life.

A member of the Nokesville Fire Department attended one of our Tartan Hills Village HOA meetings with this request to pass on to residents.  Seems perfectly reasonable to me.  Unfortunately, the Braemar Community Management Staff have no record of what style and size numbers our builder used.  I recommend taking a number off your mailbox for comparison when you make your trip to Lowe's or Home Depot for the extra numbers.

Hi Chris, Interesting post. I had such a horrible mailbox that my mailman left me a note! Needless to say I am happy with the new one!

Tiffany:  I think we take the importance of our mailboxes, particularly those with house numbers, for granted.

Chris Ann:

It is a law here that you have to have your house number prominently displayed for emergency workers.  However, I am not sure there is much of a fine involved since I see so many obscured and missing numbers.  It is a great safety tip to remind people about this.

Hi Chris Ann, safety is important. We put the numbers on our homes and most times you can't even see them. Not a good thing. Have a great weekend!

Claudette:  You can't remind people enough about safety tips like this.

Jackie:  The numbers on our houses are much smaller than what we have on the mailboxes.  Makes no sense when the houses are sitting farther back from the curb, and the mailbox is ON the curb.

Many rural areas are moving to GPS locations, as friends in rural Texas areas recently informed me.

We've got guys in Sacramento who offer to paint your house number on the curb for $5. I actually bought a plaque with my house number on it and screwed it into my brick planter on the front porch. But it keeps falling off and dangling by one screw.

Elizabeth:  We've got numbers close up to our front door, but the mailbox numbers are the easiest to read.  Numbers on the curb may be subject to being obscured by street parking.  Seems not enough residents in Braemar know the true use of a garage.

This is something I never would have thought about.  Now I'm wondering if my address is on both sides of my mailbox.
