Dancing and Good Selection of Micro-brew Beers

My girlfriend and I had been wanting to go to Firkins in Libertyville for several weeks.  We’d heard that it had an exceptional beer menu and a live blues jam every Thursday night. 

So, a spur of the moment idea last night after my work was done at 9 PM - turned into our much anticipated Firkin’s night out. 

We got a late start, but that was no problem since the band doesn't start until 10 PM.. 

At that hour of the night, parking out front is no problem, although, had we known that you can only use the back door, we would have parked in the city lot in back. 

We made our way to the bar since the dinner crowd was still occupying the tables – and took our time surveying the long list of beer, both domestic and imports.  There were many interesting beers from micro-breweries all over the US - including many new micro-breweries located in the Chicago area.

The bartenders were quick to offer samples (five max) which is a good thing for someone who doesn't know which beer they'd like best!  

Choices made, we settled back just in time for the music to start.    Of note - the kitchen closes at 10 PM so don’t even think of ordering an appetizer after that time.   Unfortunately - Firkin's doesn't offer free or even paid for popcorn, pretzels or chips - which would be nice to have with a beer...

 Vance Kelley and the Backstreet Blues Band got the weekend started a day early.  Their playlist included enough familiar songs from Motown for this 40+ north suburban crowd to feel comfortable - and the dance floor was full for most songs. 

At times - some of the music made me feel like I was at a Holiday Inn wedding reception - but some of the songs had more interest - as you might hear at Buddy Guys Legends or Kingston Mines.

I enjoyed playing my trumpet with the band for a few tunes - and received good compliments on my playing from the leader of the band - the guitar player - who had a pretty cool all-white outfit on....

All it all - it was a good night of dancing, playing with the band and tasting some very good unique beers that I've never had before.    Check out Firkins on Thursday nights.  It is a nice time.
