Why do you do what you do???

Another blog has inspired me to post the question... WHY do you do what you do? How did you get started? Here's my story...

I have had an interest in Real Estate for many years. I actually have always been house crazy- I fall in love with nearly every house I walk in to, honestly! I've always been the creative sort and my first love was interior design but through life circumstances never made it to college to specifically do that on a large scale level. I did have a small interior design business a few years ago but gave my time away too much:(

I worked for the last 6 years with my husband running a technology consulting company. We have had a really bad 9-10 months and if it was bad and could happen, most of it did. We had a manager in our company take some serious advantage and was dishonest about jobs completed, progress made, etc and we lost most all of our clients. Prior to that, I had found out I had a tumor on my intestines and on our individual ins. policy it fell under a pre-existing condition so my husband took a job that had good insurance and no pre-existing clause so that I would be able to have surgery. I depended on this other person to help keep things going... bad decision. Within 6 months we were facing foreclosure after trying with no avail to sell our house we could no longer afford. The whole ordeal inspired me to pursue a long time dream of helping others buy and sell their homes. Months later, I have been through 2 surgeries, lost my dad and had to go back to work at a "regular" job to help pay the bills but I finally managed to get my Real Estate license! I actually did it correspondence while I was bedridden from my last surgery. :)

Why do I work as a real estate agent? This is my dream. I do it because I LOVE it. I liked working with my husband, but it was never what I loved. I work two full time jobs in order to make this work. Three nights a week, I work a 12 hour shift at the hospital and often times have appointments to keep the next morning so sometimes I will be up for 24 hours before sleeping. Sunday I worked 5 hours to do an open house and had 30 minutes between it and going to the hospital to do my other job. My family thinks I am crazy! :) Maybe so- but my husband supports me in this endeavor 100%. He sees the passion I have for it. So do I and I know I am going to do great. I had a fellow call me Sunday evening while I was at my second job- he met me at the open house. Turns out he owns 5 properties, one lake front.... wants to sell and wants to buy another. Think it was worth the sacrifice!

Tell me why you do what you do! How'd you get there?

I really love being in real estate.  When I lived in Florida I got my real estate license while working two other jobs.  I enjoyed being with people, helping them find their homes and just being out in the open and meeting new people.  Over the years I have been involved in real estate in some form, whether as an agent or working for a title company or real estate attorney.  I've always loved it and only took a break when my kids were born and I stayed at home with them for a few years.  Now, they are in school full time and I have my license in Texas.  I love it and feel so happy that I am able to work in the field.  Like you, I do have to work in another field to supplement my income, but within a year I hope I won't have to anymore.  Things are picking up here a bit.  I think it is great that you persevered and were able to get your license.  Maybe within a year you won't have to be working three jobs anymore!  You'll get enough business to just work what you love.  It seems like you are headed in that direction.  Good Luck!

My story is not so different.

I have always been intrigued by real estate.  I also love looking at houses!  My friends and family teased me about being a "peeper" because I am always trying to see inside a home.

My ex-husband and I purchased a 7-Eleven store 18 years ago.  I have run that full time and enjoyed it.  However, I wondered what I would do if I sold it or did not have that income for some reason.  My current husband encouraged me to get my real estate license, which I did 2 1/2 years ago.

I am very happy that I did and I love learning this business and plan to make it my full time career.  I really love helping people.

We still have the 7-Eleven, which is a real "safety net" until I build a consistent income.

I plan on hanging in there :)

Good question.  I got started when we decided we needed to sell our house.  We had already built another one out in the country, and got overwhelmed with all the overhead of owning 2 properties.  As we are DIY-ers I thought, I can do that!  So I got my license and sold the house a few years later, though I made a couple of other sales in the meantime for friends.  At that point I was hooked.  Formerly I had been in the surfing/windsurfing/upholstery trade.... yes, often working 2 or 3 jobs as well.  The real estate overlapped with our vacation rental business (located in the house that sold), so it was a smooth transition.  Once I was free of the house and all the obligations of running the vacation rental units, I was able to devote all my time to real estate.  That's when the income became enough to get by with only 1 job.

I'm still loving it, especially meeting all the intersting people.  The "license to snoop" is kind of fun too.

Be patient and it will happen for you too.  There will be a snowball effect as you meet more people and have clients who refer you to others, as well as come back for more good service.
