Ready, set, shop, St. Louis! This last weekend of April offers two unique opportunities to buy some big things you need - a house and some appliances to put in it! Not only is the Home Buyer's Tax Credit expiring on April 30, but some special opportunities to claim appliance rebates and pay no Missouri sales tax on the purchase expires April 25.
Billions and billions of words have been sent into cyberspace about the tax credit for $8,000 for first timers and $6,500 for repeat buyers. The current version of the credit allows buyers who sign a contract by the end of April to claim it if the home closes by June 30. Realistically, if you are serious about buying, you still have time to nail down a deal. There is no apparent likelihood that the credit will be extended, so April 30 is it. If the discount is a deal maker for you, call your Realtor and head toward the checkout counter.
Missouri, like many other states, is offering rebates on certain appliances in an effort to promote more energy efficient appliances. Originating from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and continuing the emphasis on greening up America through green incentives, appliance rebate programs were designed by each state so they are all different in what they cover and when they are effective. Missouri's version of Cash for Appliances covers space heating, space cooling, water heating, clothes washers, and dishwashers. The $6.5 million in the program was recently adjusted so that more went to the washer and dishwasher categories after the first few days of the program which started on April 19. As of April 22, 80% of the money was still available.
Unlike most states, Missouri does not offer rebates on refrigerators, big energy consumers. By offering the no sales tax incentive which is good on all appliances, Missouri residents can buy those and other things not covered by the rebates, like stoves, cooktops, driers, or freezers. This bonus will enable customer who want matching appliances to save over 4% in taxes on their whole purchase and claim applicable rebates on qualifying appliances too.
Rebates range from $75 to $500 on certain models of Energy Star appliances and may be supplemented with additional rebates from Missouri utilities, appliance manufacturers, or stores. Consumers must reserve their rebates online at www.missouriApplianceRebate.com or by calling toll-free to 877-541-4848 before making their purchase. The state requires proof of recycling of the retired appliances to be submitted along with proof of purchase for the new appliances.
Because Missouri's program is generous and has the added tax savings built in through Sunday, the rebates are expected to go fast. Long after the funds are exhausted, the government is hoping that the program will have the long-lasting impact of opening consumers' eyes to the advantages of choosing energy efficient appliances. While Energy Star appliances that qualify for rebate programs are more expensive than their counterparts, consumers who buy a houseful of Energy Star appliances can save $500 a year according to www.energystar.gov. Virtually all newer appliances use less energy than in the past, but the Energy Star models are predicted to save even more per year, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
